New Delhi, INDIA: A 24-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his 18-year-old girlfriend at his rented accommodation in Munirka, southwest Delhi, after he was reportedly caught while trying to arrange the disposal of her body with the help of a friend.
The accused, identified as Anurag alias Abhishek, was arrested after one of his friends alerted the police emergency helpline (112), leading officers to the rented room where the victim's body was recovered.
According to Delhi Police, a PCR call was received at Kishangarh Police Station on the night of August 2, informing officers that a man had allegedly killed his partner and was seeking assistance to dispose of her body. Acting on the information, a police team reached the Pal Dairy area in Munirka, where the caller identified the accused, who was immediately taken into custody.
During questioning, the complainant, a 23-year-old taxi driver and friend of the accused, told investigators that he had received repeated calls from an unknown number around 9.15 pm on August 1. When he answered, Anurag allegedly claimed that his own mobile phone had been damaged and asked him to meet urgently.
When they met, Anurag allegedly confessed that he had killed Kanika, claiming he suspected her of communicating with another man. He reportedly took his friend to his third-floor rented room, where Kanika was found lying unresponsive on a bed with multiple injuries. The accused also allegedly claimed that Kanika was his wife.
Police said Anurag then took possession of the complainant's mobile phone and forced him to drive around JNU Road and Sanjay Van, allegedly searching for a secluded location to dump the body. Unable to contact anyone, the complainant suggested they first go to his residence. Once outside his home, he asked for his phone back on the pretext of calling his mother to open the gate. After recovering the device, he immediately went inside and dialled 112, informing police about the incident.
Police teams swiftly reached the spot, arrested the accused and recovered Kanika's body from the rented accommodation. She was taken to Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
During the inspection of the room, investigators recovered a wooden stick fitted with a nail, two metal hinges, and a broken baby-stand table bearing suspected bloodstains. Police believe the items were allegedly used during the assault and have sent them for forensic examination.
According to investigators, Anurag allegedly admitted during interrogation that he attacked Kanika with the wooden stick and the table. Police said he allegedly told them that he struck her multiple times on the head before stopping when she began bleeding. The FIR also notes that several parts of the victim's body had turned blue, indicating a severe assault.
Police said the accused claimed he attacked Kanika because he suspected her of speaking to another man. However, the victim's family rejected his assertion that the couple were married, stating that Kanika had only recently turned 18.
Family members said Kanika had discontinued her studies after Class 12 due to financial difficulties and had taken up a job in the hospitality sector to support her parents while saving money to pursue a professional makeup artist's course. Her father works as an autorickshaw driver, while her mother is employed at a hospital.
"She was our only hope," a family member said. "She had been in a relationship with Anurag for nearly one-and-a-half years. We had not heard from her for the past three days, and then we received the devastating news that she had been murdered."
A case has been registered at Kishangarh Police Station under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder. Police said further investigation is underway to establish the complete sequence of events and verify the statements of all those involved.
