Agra, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: A 22-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her father in a suspected honour killing in Uttar Pradesh's Agra district after she married an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel against her family's wishes, police said.
The incident took place late Sunday August 2night in Pratap Nagar under the Jaitpur police station limits, around 80 kilometres from Agra city.
According to police, the victim, Ankita Sharma, had entered into a court marriage with Amit Pachauri, an ITBP jawan and a resident of the same village, around four months ago. The marriage was reportedly opposed by her family, and despite the wedding, Ankita continued to stay at her parental home while her husband returned to duty.
Investigators said tensions within the family escalated after they came to know about the marriage. Police alleged that Ankita's father, Vimal Sharma, attacked her during an argument inside their rented house before allegedly strangling her with a scarf.
Neighbours reportedly heard the young woman's screams and alerted the police by dialling the emergency helpline 112. A police team rushed to the house and found Ankita lying unresponsive on the floor. She was declared dead, and her body was sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
The accused father was taken into custody soon after the incident. During preliminary questioning, he allegedly admitted to killing his daughter because she had married against the family's wishes, police said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Agarwal said the accused had been detained and was being questioned.
"Police received information that Vimal Sharma had killed his daughter. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and the accused has been detained. We suspect that some other people may also have been involved in the murder, and the matter is being investigated thoroughly," the DCP said.
Police said further legal action will be taken based on the post-mortem report and evidence collected during the investigation. Authorities are also examining whether any other family members had prior knowledge of, or involvement in, the alleged crime.
