Ambernath, Maharashtra, INDIA: A 26-year-old newly married woman allegedly died by suicide just 48 days after her wedding, prompting police to arrest her doctor husband and launch a search for his mother and brother over allegations of sustained physical and mental harassment.
The deceased, identified as Vishakha Tilkar, was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Ambernath, near Mumbai. Her family has accused her husband, Dr Nitin Tilkar, and his family members of subjecting her to continuous abuse, surveillance, and dowry-related harassment since their marriage on April 30.
According to the complaint lodged by Vishakha's family, relations between the two families were cordial before the wedding. However, shortly after the marriage, her in-laws allegedly began expressing dissatisfaction over the gifts and respect they received during the wedding ceremonies.
Family members alleged that Vishakha was repeatedly pressured to bring additional cash, jewellery, and valuables from her parental home. They further claimed that Dr Nitin had installed multiple CCTV cameras inside and outside the house to closely monitor her movements and interactions, leaving her with little privacy.
According to her relatives, Vishakha was frequently questioned and allegedly assaulted whenever she spoke to neighbours or people outside the family. They claimed that just two days before her death, she was beaten for speaking to a woman living in the neighbourhood.
"She was constantly under surveillance. Whenever she spoke to anyone, she was allegedly subjected to abuse and physical assault. The harassment became unbearable for her," a family member said.
Before taking the extreme step, Vishakha had reportedly informed her mother about the abuse and harassment she was facing at her matrimonial home. Concerned about her safety, her parents were making arrangements to bring her back home. However, before they could do so, they received information that she had allegedly died by suicide.
Based on the family's complaint, the Shivajinagar Police in Ambernath registered a case against Dr Nitin Tilkar, his mother Chhaya Tilkar, and brother Ninad Tilkar under relevant sections pertaining to abetment of suicide and cruelty by husband or relatives.
Police have arrested Dr Nitin Tilkar and initiated a search operation to trace the other two accused, who remain absconding.
Further investigation is underway.
