Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh, INDIA: A 19-year-old man accused of brutally murdering a minor girl in Khazipet village was shot in the leg by police on Saturday April 11 morning after he allegedly attempted to escape custody and attacked officers during transit.

The accused, identified as A. Venkatesh, had been arrested on Friday for the alleged murder of a 17-year-old intermediate student. Police said he entered the girl’s house when she was alone and slit her throat, reportedly after she rejected him.

Tension in Village, Accused Moved

Following the incident, tensions escalated in Khazipet, with the victim’s family and local residents demanding strict action and attempting to attack the accused. In view of the volatile situation, police shifted Venkatesh to Mydukur police station for security reasons.

However, fearing further unrest, authorities decided to move him again to another location on Saturday morning.

Escape Attempt and Police Firing

According to Kadapa Superintendent of Police Shelke Nachiket Vishwanath, Venkatesh escaped while being transported under police custody. A search operation was immediately launched, and he was traced near Basapuram checkpost.

Police said the accused attacked officers with a rod, injuring two constables, identified as Sivaiah and Bala Narasimhulu. Despite repeated warnings to surrender and a warning shot fired in the air, Venkatesh allegedly continued to behave aggressively and advanced towards the police.

“Left with no option, police fired two rounds below his knees to bring the situation under control,” the SP said.

Injuries and Hospitalisation

Venkatesh sustained a bullet injury to his leg and was initially given first aid at a government hospital in Mydukur. He was later shifted under tight security to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Kadapa. Doctors have stated that he is out of danger.

The two injured constables were also admitted for treatment.

Assurances of Justice

Police officials assured the victim’s family that justice would be ensured. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
