Syringe, basement room and a deadly secret: Hospital worker kills wife over dowry

Gurugram, Haryana, INDIA: In a chilling case of alleged dowry-related murder, a 23-year-old nurse, Kajal, died under suspicious circumstances in Gurugram, with police later confirming that her husband administered a poisonous injection that led to her death.

Kajal was found unconscious and bleeding at her maternal home in Garhi Harsaru on March 18. Her family rushed her to a nearby hospital, from where she was referred to a civic-run facility. However, she died before she could be shifted further, prompting suspicion and a police investigation.

During the probe, investigators learned that Kajal’s husband, Arun Sharma—who worked in the X-ray department at a private hospital—had taken her to a basement room shortly before she was discovered unconscious. The family also reported finding a syringe in the bathroom, raising suspicions that she had been injected with a toxic substance.

The couple, who had married in November 2025 with the consent of both families, had recently moved into Kajal’s maternal home from a rented apartment, just days before Holi.

According to Kajal’s brother, Gurdeep, the marriage had been troubled from the beginning. 

He alleged that Arun developed a drug addiction soon after the wedding and frequently assaulted Kajal while demanding dowry. On the night of March 17, Arun allegedly assaulted her again while under the influence of alcohol.

The following morning, around 9:15 am, Arun reportedly took Kajal to the basement under the pretext of a private conversation. An argument is believed to have ensued, after which Kajal was found unconscious, with blood reportedly oozing from her nose.

During interrogation, Arun allegedly confessed to administering a poisonous injection to his wife, which led to her death. Police have arrested him from a railway station and produced him before a local court, which remanded him to three days of police custody.

A case has been registered under Section 80(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to dowry death, at the Sector 10A police station in Gurugram.

Police officials said the victim’s viscera has been sent for forensic examination, and the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the report is received. Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
