Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: In a gruesome case that shocked the region, the Bulandshahr Police have cracked the murder of a woman whose headless body was discovered near a canal in a forested stretch of Ghunghrawali village on March 15. Two accused, including the victim’s live-in partner, have been arrested, while a third remains absconding.

The victim, identified as Babli, was recognised by her family after police circulated her photograph and identifying details on social media. Her mother, daughter, and brother-in-law confirmed her identity on March 22, nearly a week after the body was found.

According to police, the prime accused, Vikas Kumar (32), had called Babli to his native village on the day of the incident. Once there, he, along with his cousin Sachin and friend Aman Kumar, allegedly consumed alcohol before carrying out the murder.

Bulandshahr SP City Shanker Prasad said the trio restrained Babli by her limbs and killed her using a sharp-edged weapon. In a calculated attempt to delay identification and investigation, they decapitated her and disposed of the head nearly 500 metres away from the body.

Investigations revealed that Babli had entered into a relationship with Vikas following the death of her husband, Ajay, who had succumbed to cancer around two-and-a-half years ago. Vikas, who had earlier worked with Ajay at a private hospital in Delhi, later began living with Babli in the city.

However, tensions escalated after Vikas decided to marry another woman in December 2025.

Police said Babli had been pressuring him to continue their relationship and marry her instead, which allegedly led Vikas to plot her murder.

In a chilling sequence of events after the crime, Vikas reportedly attended a family function in his village before returning to Muradnagar in Ghaziabad, where he had been residing after his marriage. In an attempt to mislead investigators, he even filed a missing person complaint for Babli.

Police later traced Vikas near the crime scene using surveillance inputs, leading to his arrest in Muradnagar. Co-accused Aman Kumar was apprehended separately from Bulandshahr. Both have reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.

Authorities have recovered the weapon used in the murder, along with illegal firearms and the motorcycle used by the accused. Efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest the third accused Sachin.

An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of murder and destruction of evidence. Further investigation is underway.
