Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: In a shocking case from Baghpat district, a woman and her mother have been arrested for allegedly murdering her husband following a dispute over property and persistent blackmail.

The victim, identified as Sonu (35), was found dead in Jivana Guliyan village on Sunday October 12 morning. His brother subsequently lodged a police complaint, prompting an investigation by Binouli Police Station under in-charge Rakesh Kumar Sharma.

During the probe, it emerged that Sonu had long been embroiled in a property dispute with his mother-in-law, Saroj. According to police, Saroj had purchased a plot for ₹3 lakh some time ago, which has since appreciated to nearly ₹30 lakh. Sonu had allegedly been pressuring Saroj to transfer ownership of the land into his name.

In her statement to police, Sonia, Sonu’s wife, revealed that her husband had secretly recorded a video of her mother bathing and used it to blackmail them, threatening to make the footage public if the property was not transferred to him.

Fed up with the harassment and threats, Sonia and her mother allegedly decided to kill Sonu. On the evening of October 11, they reportedly mixed sleeping pills in his milk, and once he fell into a deep sleep, strangled him with a rope. The duo then attempted to pass off the murder as a suicide by hanging his body and destroying his mobile phone to erase evidence.

Police recovered Sonu’s body and, after forensic examination and interrogation, confirmed the murder. Both women confessed to the crime and were produced before court on October 14, after which they were remanded to judicial custody.

A case has been registered against seven individuals in total, and further investigation is underway to determine if others were involved in the conspiracy.
