Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India — In a disturbing case of domestic violence, a man allegedly threw acid on his wife and two daughters while they were asleep at their residence in Tikri village, Shahjahanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, on the night of April 25, 2025.
According to local authorities, the accused, identified as Ram Gopal (50), suspected his wife, Ramguni (46), of having an extramarital affair. Acting on his suspicions, he scaled the wall of the house around midnight and attacked his sleeping wife and daughters, Neha (22) and Ruchita (16), with acid. All three victims sustained severe burn injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital in Shahjahanpur.
Police Response and Investigation
Following the attack, the victims' son, Ashu (19), who was not at home during the incident, filed a First Information Report (FIR) against his father and maternal uncle, Guddu, alleging their joint involvement in the assault.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajesh Dwivedi confirmed that Ram Gopal was arrested shortly after the attack. Police have also detained a shopkeeper from Hardoi district who illegally sold the acid to the accused. Authorities are investigating the case further and are in the process of retrieving the Call Detail Records (CDR) of all suspects to uncover additional evidence.
The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Nigohi Police Station in Shahjahanpur. Officials stated that Ram Gopal, a habitual alcoholic, had been estranged from his family for nearly 14 years. His history of domestic violence and alcohol addiction had earlier forced his wife to leave him and settle with her children in Tikri village.
Background of the Case
According to police reports and family testimonies, Ram Gopal had previously sold all his agricultural land in Shahabad town, Hardoi district, to finance his alcoholism. Frequent domestic disputes and allegations of infidelity by Ram Gopal led Ramguni to separate from him and live independently with her children.
On April 25, 2025, driven by intoxication and rage, Ram Gopal and his brother-in-law allegedly planned the acid attack. Witnesses reported that after hearing the victims' screams, neighbours rushed to the scene, but the attackers fled before they could intervene.
The police have confirmed that although Ram Gopal implicated his brother-in-law in the crime, the injured wife has denied Guddu's direct involvement. Authorities are continuing to investigate his role based on telecommunication records.
Legal Action
In addition to arresting the main accused, authorities have taken stringent action against the shopkeeper who illegally sold the acid without proper licensing, a violation of India's Poison Control Regulations.
Both the accused and the shopkeeper are being interrogated, and further legal proceedings are underway.
The police emphasized that strict action will be taken against all responsible parties under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including attempt to murder and acid attack charges under the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013.
