Dehradun, Uttarakhand, INDIA: An elderly couple and a house help were allegedly killed with a screwdriver at a house in Dehradun on Tuesday October 6, with police arresting a plumber who had been working for the family for around two years.

The victims were identified as Ramesh Kapoor, around 80, his wife Rajni Kapoor, around 75, and house help Tilya Devi. Police said the incident took place at the couple’s residence in the Raipur area of Dehradun.

According to Dehradun SSP Pramendra Dobal, the accused had been called to the house for plumbing work and had previously carried out similar jobs for the couple.

Police said that after completing the work, an argument allegedly broke out over payment. During preliminary questioning, the accused claimed that he had demanded Rs 600 for the work but was offered Rs 300.

Investigators allege that the dispute escalated and the plumber attacked the elderly couple with a screwdriver.

Police said Tilya Devi, who was nearby, intervened after hearing the commotion and was also attacked. All three sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital, where they were declared dead.

Following the attack, local residents reportedly noticed a man leaving the area and apprehended him before handing him over to police.

Police said CCTV footage from the area showed the suspect entering and leaving the house alone, supporting their preliminary assessment that no other person was involved in the attack.

A forensic team subsequently examined the crime scene and collected evidence. Police said plumbing work had indeed been carried out at the house, while tools connected with the work were also recovered and seized for examination.

Investigators also recovered a gold chain from the accused's possession, raising suspicion that robbery may also have formed part of the crime.

According to police, the accused initially left the house following the payment dispute but allegedly returned and committed the killings before taking the chain. Investigators are examining the precise sequence of events and whether robbery was planned or occurred after the confrontation.

Police registered a case involving murder and robbery and said the accused would be produced before the court as the investigation continued.

Senior police officers, including SSP Dobal, visited the scene and reviewed the investigation. Forensic evidence, CCTV footage and the recovered articles are being examined to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killings.

The elderly couple's two sons reportedly live in Pune and Delhi, while Tilya Devi, who hailed from Bihar, was the mother of four children.

Police said further investigation is underway.
