Jalgaon, Maharashtra, INDIA: A newlywed woman and her alleged accomplice have been arrested for reportedly attempting to kill members of her husband's family by mixing rat poison into their food, just two days after her wedding in Velhane village of Maharashtra's Jalgaon district. Police suspect that the marriage, arranged through an intermediary for ₹2.5 lakh, may have been part of a larger interstate marriage fraud racket.
The accused have been identified as Suman Subhash Sahani and Aarti Suryaprakash Patel, both in their mid-20s. They were apprehended near Nimgul village in neighbouring Dhule district after allegedly fleeing the groom's house with cash and jewellery.
According to police, Valmik Tarachand Patil (32), a resident of Velhane village in Parola taluka, married Suman on October 7, 2026. The marriage was reportedly arranged through an agent who brought the bride from Jharkhand after negotiating a payment of ₹2.5 lakh. Aarti, who accompanied Suman, is reportedly from Chhattisgarh.
Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the marriage, including the financial transaction and the role of the intermediary.
Poison Allegedly Mixed into Family's Dinner
Police said the alleged poisoning took place on the night of October 9, barely two days after the wedding.
According to investigators, Suman and Aarti allegedly mixed rat poison into the dinner prepared for the Patil family. Valmik, his father Tarachand Shantaram Patil and mother Sarlabai consumed the food and began experiencing symptoms of poisoning.
Valmik's elder brother, Ganesh Tarachand Patil (34), who later lodged the police complaint, also reportedly consumed a small portion of the meal. His wife and children did not eat the food.
Despite feeling unwell, some family members initially went to bed, believing their condition would improve by morning.
However, Ganesh reportedly began losing his balance while taking an evening walk. His friends noticed his unusual condition and advised him to return home.
As the family's health deteriorated, the two accused allegedly took advantage of the situation to escape.
Accused Allegedly Fled with Cash and Jewellery
Police said Suman and Aarti allegedly arranged a vehicle around 4 am on October 10 and left Velhane village, taking cash and jewellery received during the wedding celebrations.
The suspected poisoning came to light the following morning when the affected family members required medical attention.
Three members of the family were subsequently admitted to the Government Civil Hospital in Jalgaon for treatment. Their condition is now reported to be stable.
Following the incident, Ganesh approached the Parola police and lodged a complaint against the two women.
News of the alleged poisoning triggered anger among relatives and villagers, who gathered outside the police station and reportedly blocked the road, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused.
Police Track Down Accused in Dhule
After receiving information from the village Police Patil, the Parola police launched an investigation and dispatched personnel to Velhane.
Preliminary inquiries indicated that the two women had travelled towards Dhule district.
A police team subsequently traced their movements and intercepted them approximately three kilometres from Nimgul village while they were allegedly attempting to escape.
"The moment we received information, we launched a search operation. After tracking their location, we intercepted both women in Nimgul village in Dhule district," Parola Police Inspector Deepak Patil said.
Both women were taken into custody and subsequently arrested.
Police have registered a case under Sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 123 (causing hurt by means of poison) and 316(2) (criminal breach of trust), along with other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police Suspect Marriage Fraud Racket
Investigators suspect that the marriage may have been deliberately arranged to gain access to the Patil family's money and valuables.
According to local accounts, the Patil family is financially well-established, and Valmik's mother is a former village sarpanch. The family had reportedly sought a bride from outside Maharashtra after facing difficulties finding a suitable match locally.
Police are now investigating whether the accused had entered into the marriage with the intention of committing theft and whether similar offences had been carried out elsewhere.
The role of the agent who allegedly arranged the marriage for ₹2.5 lakh has also come under scrutiny.
Investigators are attempting to establish how the women came into contact with the intermediary, whether the marriage arrangement was genuine and whether other individuals were involved in the alleged conspiracy.
Police Inspector Patil said efforts were underway to trace the main interstate agent suspected of involvement in the case.
"The main interstate agent linked to the racket will be arrested soon," he said.
The investigation is being conducted under the supervision of Jalgaon Superintendent of Police Srikant Dhivare.
Police are also examining the source of the suspected poison, the alleged theft of wedding valuables and the possibility of an organised network arranging fraudulent marriages across state borders.
Further investigation is underway.
