Woman, lover and mother arrested for killing bedridden husband

Bengaluru, Karnataka, INDIA: A 37-year-old woman, her alleged lover and her mother have been arrested for allegedly murdering her bedridden husband and attempting to pass off his death as a heart attack in Bengaluru, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Mubarak Basha, 40, a resident of Yellappa Garden in Kithaganur. Basha, who previously ran a mutton shop, had been largely bedridden for the past two years after suffering a paralytic stroke.

The arrested accused have been identified as Basha's wife Shahina Banu, her mother Hasina, and Shahina's alleged lover Naheemuddin Qureshi.

According to police, Basha died at his residence on September 9. Shahina and her mother allegedly informed relatives that he had suffered a heart attack. However, Basha's family members became suspicious after noticing injuries on his body and approached the Avalahalli police.

Police initially registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body for a postmortem examination. The autopsy subsequently indicated that Basha had died of asphyxiation and revealed injuries on different parts of his body, including his face and private parts, prompting police to launch a murder investigation.

During questioning, police allegedly uncovered a conspiracy involving Shahina, her mother and Qureshi.

Police said Shahina and Basha had been married for several years and have a daughter. After Basha suffered a stroke and became bedridden, Shahina reportedly took on much of the responsibility for caring for him. Their daughter was also said to have been suffering from health problems.

According to investigators, Qureshi, who was known to the family, began frequently visiting their home claiming that he could help treat the couple's daughter. Police allege that Shahina began confiding in Qureshi about her personal difficulties, and the two subsequently developed a relationship.

Investigators said Basha had allegedly objected to their relationship and repeatedly warned his wife about it.

Police further alleged that Shahina had told Qureshi that she was struggling to care for her bedridden husband. Qureshi is accused of suggesting that Basha be killed, following which Shahina and her mother allegedly planned the murder.

On September 9, while Basha was asleep, Shahina and her mother allegedly attempted to suffocate him with a pillow. Police said he was also assaulted before he died.

The two women then allegedly tried to portray the death as a heart attack and informed relatives accordingly. However, suspicions raised by Basha's family and the subsequent postmortem findings led investigators to treat the case as murder.

Following questioning, Shahina and her mother were arrested, while Qureshi was taken into custody for his alleged role in instigating and conspiring in the killing.

The Avalahalli police have arrested all three accused, who have subsequently been remanded to judicial custody.
