Teacher shot dead inside school, attacker dies by suicide

Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: A 26-year-old teacher was shot dead inside a school in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri on Monday, allegedly by a man known to her who later died by suicide, police said.

The shooting took place at around 11:30 am at Children’s Academy School, triggering panic among students and staff who were present on the premises.

Police identified the victim as Nishat Fatima, a resident of Hidayat Nagar under the Sadar Kotwali area. The suspected attacker was identified as Mohammed Saud, 28.

According to Kheri Senior Superintendent of Police Khyati Garg, Saud entered the school premises to meet Fatima, who had been working there as a teacher for about a year.

Police said Saud went upstairs with Fatima and the two spoke in a corridor. During the conversation, he allegedly pulled a firearm from a bag and shot her before turning the weapon on himself.

Both sustained fatal gunshot injuries.

The incident occurred while children were present at the school. Following the gunfire, panic spread through the premises and staff alerted police.

A police team rushed to the school, secured the area and escorted students from the building. The corridor where the shooting occurred was cordoned off for examination.

A forensic team later inspected the scene and collected evidence. Police are also examining CCTV footage from the school as part of the investigation.

Some reports citing investigators said CCTV footage appeared to show Saud taking Fatima towards the upper floor while students were nearby. Police are examining the footage to establish the exact sequence of events.

Investigators said Fatima and Saud had known each other for some time and had remained in regular contact. Some reports have described them as having previously been in a relationship, but police have not yet established a confirmed motive for the shooting.

The bodies were sent for post-mortem examinations.

Police are questioning school officials, teachers, eyewitnesses and the families of Fatima and Saud to determine what led to the shooting.

Investigators are also expected to examine the school’s security and entry procedures, including how the armed man was able to enter the premises.

Further details are expected to emerge as police examine CCTV footage, forensic evidence and witness statements.
