Jamui, Bihar, INDIA: The arrest of the alleged main accused in the molestation of a minor girl in Bihar’s Jamui district has led police to his father, who was allegedly wanted for more than two decades in connection with a 2003 double murder case, police said.
Ganauri Yadav, father of accused Nandan Yadav, was arrested after investigators examining Nandan’s background discovered that Ganauri was a named accused in a double murder case registered on April 3, 2003.
According to police, Ganauri had allegedly been absconding for about 21 years.
The development came as police investigated a September 19 incident in which a Class 10 student and her male friend were allegedly stopped and harassed by a group near the Jamui-Lakhisarai border.
Video clips of the incident, apparently recorded by members of the group, later circulated on social media and sparked outrage. The footage allegedly showed the girl being assaulted and touched inappropriately, while her male friend was also attacked.
Police said neither the girl nor her friend had initially lodged a complaint, and action was initiated after the videos surfaced online.
SIT formed after video surfaces
Following the circulation of the footage, Jamui Police constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to identify and arrest those allegedly involved.
Three minor boys were initially detained in connection with the case. Police subsequently launched raids to trace Nandan Yadav, identified by investigators as the alleged main accused, and another accused, Hareram.
According to Jamui Superintendent of Police Biswajeet Dayal, officers located Nandan and Hareram during a police operation.
Police alleged that Nandan attempted to escape and opened fire at the team. Officers retaliated, and Nandan sustained a gunshot injury to his leg, the SP said.
Hareram allegedly suffered a knee fracture while attempting to flee.
“An SIT had been constituted to investigate the incident. Three minor boys were detained yesterday. Raids were on today for the remaining accused. When Nandan and his accomplice Hareram were spotted by a police team this morning, the former opened fire. He is undergoing treatment at a hospital along with Hareram, who fractured his knee while trying to flee the spot,” Dayal said.
With their arrests, five people — including three minors — have been held in connection with the case.
Investigation leads police to 2003 murder case
As investigators examined Nandan’s criminal and family background, they came across an old case allegedly involving his father.
Police records showed that Ganauri Yadav had been named as an accused in a double murder registered on April 3, 2003.
According to police, two men, identified as DP Yadav and Pune Yadav, were allegedly killed in Pratappur village following a business dispute. The mother of the deceased had named Ganauri as an accused in the case.
Police said Ganauri had remained beyond their reach for more than two decades.
The investigation into his son’s alleged involvement in the recent molestation case ultimately led officers back to the 2003 case, resulting in Ganauri’s arrest.
Minors to be produced before Juvenile Justice Board
Munger Range DIG Rakesh Kumar, who was camping in Jamui following the incident, said the three detained minors would be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board for further proceedings.
Nandan and Hareram, being adults, will face proceedings before a regular court, he said.
Police have indicated that further arrests could be made if questioning of those already apprehended reveals the involvement of additional people.
Police probe circulation of minor girl’s video
Investigators are also examining how the videos of the alleged assault were circulated on social media.
Police expressed concern that the minor girl’s face was clearly visible in the footage shared online.
ADG, Law and Order, K Suhita Anupam said action would also be taken against those responsible for circulating the clips.
“The incident was horrifying, but equally appalling was the act of sharing the video clips on social media, in which the girl’s face could be seen clearly. Those responsible for circulating the video will also be booked under the IT Act,” Anupam said.
Police said further investigation into both the alleged assault and the circulation of the videos is underway
