Chandigarh, INDIA: The investigation into the murder of Chandigarh Police Head Constable Nitin Singh has taken a new turn, with police alleging that his teenage son, Armaan Singh, had planned to kill both his parents and inherit family properties worth crores.
Armaan, 18, is accused of shooting his father dead at the family’s Sector 22 residence on September 25. Investigators now allege that after killing Nitin, he also attempted to strangle his mother, Monica, a police officer, before she managed to escape and seek help from neighbours.
Police suspect that a dispute over Armaan’s relationship and his desire to gain control of the family’s property were behind the alleged crime.
Police Probe Property and Relationship Motive
According to police, Armaan is the only child of Nitin and Monica and was allegedly eyeing substantial properties owned by the family.
These reportedly include a recently purchased house in Zirakpur and around seven to eight acres of land at Khatauli village in Panchkula.
Investigators said Armaan wanted to marry a girl with whom he was in a relationship, while his parents had allegedly asked him to wait until he was older.
Police allege that he believed that, as the couple’s only child, he would inherit their assets if both his parents died and would then be able to live independently with his partner.
The girl has also been questioned during the investigation. Police said they found no evidence suggesting that she knew about or participated in the alleged plan.
Argument Preceded Fatal Shooting
According to the investigation, Armaan had been staying with his grandparents and returned to his parents’ Sector 22 home around two days before the killing.
Police said an argument took place between father and son before the shooting. Investigators are examining the exact circumstances surrounding the dispute, including disagreements relating to Armaan’s relationship.
At around 4.30 am on September 25, another argument allegedly broke out after an alarm went off and disturbed Nitin’s sleep.
After the argument ended, Nitin reportedly went back to sleep.
Police allege that Armaan then used a country-made pistol to shoot his father in the head, killing him inside the house.
Mother Allegedly Attacked After Discovering Body
Nitin’s wife Monica was in another room and later discovered her husband’s body.
According to police, Armaan then allegedly attacked his mother and attempted to strangle her.
He is also alleged to have told her, “We’ll all die today.”
Monica managed to escape from him and ran to the terrace, where she called out to neighbours for help. She allegedly informed them that her son had killed her husband, following which police were alerted.
A subsequent medical examination reportedly found injury marks on Monica’s neck.
Alleged Attempt to Stage Outsider Attack
Despite the incident, Armaan did not immediately flee the house.
When police personnel arrived, he allegedly attempted to convince investigators that an unidentified intruder had entered the residence, shot his father and escaped.
He reportedly claimed that he had tried to catch the supposed attacker and that his shirt had been torn during the struggle.
Investigators, however, found inconsistencies in his account while examining the crime scene and questioning those present.
He was subsequently arrested.
Police later recovered the country-made pistol allegedly used in the killing from the terrace of the residence.
Alleged Arms Supplier Arrested in Haridwar
The investigation into the firearm led police to Mohammad Shaheen, 28, who was arrested from Haridwar in Uttarakhand late on Monday, September 28, night.
Police allege that Shaheen, a carpenter by profession, was also involved in illegally supplying firearms.
Investigators claim Armaan obtained the country-made pistol from Shaheen around 10 days before his father’s killing, a development that police say supports their suspicion that the crime was planned in advance.
Shaheen has been remanded to four days of police custody.
Police are now investigating how Armaan allegedly came into contact with him and whether Shaheen supplied illegal firearms to other people in Chandigarh and the surrounding tricity region.
Investigators are also searching for another person suspected of being associated with the alleged weapons-supply operation.
Police Custody Extended
Armaan’s initial police remand ended on Tuesday. He was produced before a court again, which extended his police custody by another four days.
Investigators are expected to question him further about the alleged plan to kill both parents, the procurement of the firearm and the suspected property motive.
Police have said additional provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita are being added to the case as the investigation progresses. The FIR was initially registered under provisions relating to murder and the Arms Act, while police said provisions concerning hurt and criminal conspiracy would also be invoked based on the evidence gathered.
Earlier Case Against Armaan
The murder investigation has also brought renewed attention to an earlier criminal case involving Armaan.
According to police, he was arrested last year in connection with an incident in which two people were allegedly run over while he was driving a friend’s Mahindra Thar near Kalagram.
He was subsequently released on bail in that case.
Police are continuing to reconstruct the events before and after Nitin Singh’s killing and investigate whether anyone else assisted Armaan in procuring the weapon or planning the alleged crime.
