Agra, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: A 40-year-old woman has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra after police recovered remains believed to be those of her husband from beneath the bathroom floor of their home, weeks after he was reported missing.
Ruby Sharma is accused of killing her 44-year-old husband, Surendra Sharma, burying his body beneath concrete and later claiming that he had disappeared.
Police said Ruby had joined the search for her husband and reportedly cried in front of neighbours after he went missing. Investigators, however, became suspicious after finding inconsistencies in accounts surrounding Surendra’s disappearance.
The case eventually led officers back to the couple’s home in Renuka Dham Colony in Agra’s Dehtora area, where part of the bathroom floor appeared to have been recently renovated.
Police and workers broke through the tiles and concrete and discovered skeletal remains buried underneath. The remains were sent for a post-mortem examination to confirm the identity and establish the cause of death.
Husband Reported Missing
Surendra’s brother, Anil Sharma, reported him missing at Sikandra Police Station on May 26, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police Ameesha of the Hariparvat area.
Ruby also approached police claiming that her husband had disappeared and reportedly participated in efforts to locate him.
Police initially investigated the case as a disappearance, but doubts emerged as officers and Surendra’s relatives noticed inconsistencies in Ruby’s version of events.
A significant breakthrough came after Anil raised concerns about unexplained withdrawals from a bank account into which the pension of Surendra’s late father was deposited.
The pension was shared between the two brothers. Surendra was reportedly carrying the account’s ATM card when he disappeared, but investigators found that money continued to be withdrawn after the missing-person complaint was filed.
The suspicious transactions prompted police to question Ruby more closely and focus their investigation on the family home.
Remains Found Beneath Bathroom Floor
During a search of the house, investigators noticed that a section of the bathroom floor appeared to have been recently repaired or renovated.
Police, accompanied by workers, removed the tiles and broke through a layer of concrete. Skeletal remains were discovered buried beneath the floor.
Police are also awaiting the medical findings to establish exactly how he died.
Kheer Allegedly Laced With Sleeping Tablets
Investigators believe Surendra was killed on May 18, eight days before his disappearance was formally reported.
According to the police account, Ruby allegedly mixed a large quantity of sleeping tablets into a bowl of kheer, a traditional Indian rice pudding, and served it to her husband.
Police allege that Surendra subsequently lost consciousness and remained motionless on a bed.
The couple’s daughters reportedly did not immediately suspect anything unusual because they were accustomed to seeing their father sleep for extended periods after consuming alcohol.
Investigators suspect Ruby killed Surendra after he became unconscious. However, police said the precise cause and manner of death will depend on the post-mortem and forensic findings.
Body Allegedly Buried Under Concrete
Police allege that the following morning Ruby took the couple’s two daughters to the home of Surendra’s brother before returning to the house alone.
Investigators claim she then concealed Surendra’s body in a pit in the bathroom and covered the area with concrete. Fresh tiles were allegedly installed over the burial site in an attempt to conceal the remains.
Ruby is reported to have admitted involvement during questioning.
Police Probe Possible Accomplices
Investigators are also examining whether Ruby acted alone.
Police believe digging a pit, moving a body and concealing it beneath concrete could have been difficult for one person to carry out without assistance.
Officers are therefore investigating whether anyone helped Ruby either in the alleged killing or in disposing of and concealing the body.
History of Marital Disputes
Police said Surendra had been unemployed for some time and depended partly on his late father’s pension.
Investigators allege that he regularly consumed alcohol, demanded money from his wife and assaulted her when she refused. Neighbours have also reportedly told investigators and journalists that the couple frequently argued.
Ruby and Surendra had been married for around 16 years and had two daughters.
Ruby remains in police custody and is being questioned as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding Surendra’s death and whether other people were involved.
