Karur, Tamil Nadu, INDIA: A 26-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly murdering her grandmother and critically injuring her maternal aunt following a dispute over the return of her educational certificates in Tamil Nadu's Karur district, police said.
The incident took place at Mummatchi Reddipatti village near Kulithalai.
According to investigators, the accused, identified as M. Sugitha, a resident of Periya Milaguparai in Tiruchy district, had married a man of her choice about six years ago against her family's wishes. Police said that after the marriage, her educational certificates remained at the home of her grandmother, 70-year-old Pappammal.
Investigators said Sugitha visited her grandmother's house to collect the certificates. Police allege that an argument broke out after Pappammal refused to hand over the documents and instead urged Sugitha to return to her mother and reconcile with the family.
According to police, Sugitha then allegedly attacked Pappammal with a screwdriver, inflicting fatal injuries to her neck and throat.
Pappammal's daughter, Manjula, who attempted to intervene, was also allegedly stabbed multiple times and sustained critical injuries. She was rushed to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchirappalli, where she remains under treatment.
Police said the attack occurred while Pappammal and Manjula were alone at home. Pappammal's husband, Chinnasamy, and son, Rajasekar, had gone out for work earlier in the day. When Chinnasamy returned home, he found both women lying in pools of blood and immediately alerted relatives and police.
Officers from Nangavaram Police Station responded to the scene and launched an investigation. Karur Superintendent of Police D. N. Hari Kiran Prasad also visited the crime scene as part of the inquiry.
During the investigation, detectives identified Sugitha as the primary suspect and arrested her. Police have registered a criminal case and are continuing their investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The body of Pappammal was sent to the Government Hospital in Karur for a post-mortem examination, while investigators continue collecting forensic and witness evidence.
