Washim, Maharashtra, INDIA: A 28-year-old Indian Army jawan has been arrested for allegedly strangling his seven-month-pregnant wife to death at their home in Maharashtra’s Washim district and attempting to portray her death as the result of an accidental fall, police said.
The accused, identified as Dnyaneshwar Madne, serves with the Army’s 6 Maratha Battalion. Police have registered a murder case against him and also named his parents as accused following a complaint lodged by the victim’s family.
The victim, identified as Dipali, was seven months pregnant at the time of her death.
According to the complaint, Dnyaneshwar telephoned Dipali’s family at around 3 pm on Thursday August 6 and informed them that she had fallen at home and had been taken to hospital for treatment.
Dipali’s relatives, who live in Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh, immediately left for Washim after receiving the call and reached there at around 7 pm.
Police suspect that an argument had taken place between the couple shortly before Dnyaneshwar was scheduled to leave for Jammu and Kashmir. During the dispute, he allegedly strangled Dipali.
Following the incident, Dipali was taken by ambulance to a private hospital. She was subsequently referred to a government hospital, where doctors reportedly noticed suspicious injury marks around her neck and alerted the police.
Senior police officer Manish Thakre said police received information from the government hospital that a woman’s body had been brought there in an ambulance.
When officers reached the hospital and examined the circumstances, they noticed injury marks on Dipali’s neck, raising suspicion that her death may not have resulted from an accidental fall.
The development prompted police to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death and the version of events allegedly given by her husband.
Family alleges harassment over suspected affair
Dipali’s brother, Rahul Madne, alleged in his complaint that Dnyaneshwar was involved in an extramarital relationship and had been harassing his wife over the issue.
Rahul further alleged that the marital dispute had been continuing for some time and that members of both families had previously intervened in an attempt to resolve the differences between the couple. Despite the intervention, the alleged harassment continued, according to the family.
Based on the complaint filed by Dipali’s brother and the preliminary medical findings, police registered a murder case against Dnyaneshwar and his parents.
Dnyaneshwar was subsequently taken into custody.
Police are now investigating the exact sequence of events leading to Dipali’s death, the allegations of prolonged harassment and the suspected extramarital relationship. Investigators are also examining the circumstances under which she was transported to the hospitals and the initial claim that she had suffered injuries after falling at home.
