Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: A 32-year-old woman and her younger sister have been arrested for allegedly murdering the woman's live-in partner in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad and attempting to disguise the crime as a suicide. Police said the accused claimed they killed the man after suspecting he had developed sexual intentions towards the woman's 13-year-old daughter.
The accused, identified as Kiran and her 21-year-old sister Kashish, allegedly killed Zakir, a mason, inside their rented house in Tronica City on June 23. According to investigators, the sisters struck Zakir on the head with a wooden stick, rendering him unconscious, before strangling him with a gamcha (cotton towel).
To mislead investigators, they allegedly staged the crime scene to resemble a suicide by hanging. Police said they tied the towel around Zakir's neck and suspended his body from a ceiling fan, even bending the fan blades to make the hanging appear genuine.
Kiran then raised an alarm, informing neighbours that Zakir had taken his own life. She also called Zakir's brother, Sameer Khan alias Nasir, using the victim's mobile phone and repeated the suicide claim. Zakir was transported to a nearby hospital in a tempo, where he was declared dead on arrival. His family members were also told that he had died by suicide.
However, the post-mortem examination reportedly revealed blunt-force injuries and concluded that the cause of death was strangulation, prompting police to investigate the case as a homicide.
According to police, Zakir's brother filed a complaint alleging foul play, following which multiple police teams reviewed CCTV footage, gathered local intelligence and questioned the suspects. The investigation led to the arrest of Kiran and Kashish within 12 hours of the complaint.
Addressing a press conference, ACP Siddharth Gautam said the sisters eventually confessed during sustained interrogation after their statements contradicted each other.
Police said Kiran had known Zakir for nearly four years and had been living with him for the past eight to nine months. She had moved into his rented accommodation along with her three children—a 13-year-old daughter and two sons, aged 11 and 9—from her previous marriage.
During interrogation, Kiran allegedly told investigators that she had become suspicious about Zakir's intentions towards her teenage daughter nearly two months ago.
"She stated that she feared Zakir might sexually assault her daughter. According to her statement, she repeatedly tried to stop him from approaching the child, but he ignored her objections," ACP Gautam said.
Police further alleged that around 20 days before the murder, Kiran informed her sister about the situation and the two began planning Zakir's killing. Investigators claim the sisters watched crime-related videos on YouTube to learn how to stage the murder as a suicide.
On the morning of June 23, they allegedly booked a cab using Zakir's mobile phone and asked the three children to wait inside the vehicle after it arrived. Once the children had left the house, Kiran allegedly struck Zakir with a wooden stick, knocking him unconscious. The sisters then strangled him with a towel.
After the murder, they reportedly hid the stick behind a water tank on the rooftop before arranging the body to resemble a suicide. They subsequently created a commotion to attract neighbours and reinforce the false narrative.
Police have recovered the wooden stick and the towel allegedly used in the crime. Both women have been arrested, and further legal proceedings are underway.
Investigators said the motive cited by the accused is being verified as part of the ongoing investigation. Police have not indicated whether there had been any prior complaint or evidence regarding the alleged misconduct towards the minor.
