Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: Two brothers have been arrested for allegedly beating and strangling their parents to death during a dispute over family property at their home in Ghaziabad's Bhim Nagar, police said.
The incident took place late on the night of July 20, when the victims—a 58-year-old man and his 54-year-old wife—were allegedly attacked inside their residence. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital but were declared dead on arrival.
The accused, aged 30 and 28, are both cab drivers and were taken into custody from the house shortly after the incident.
According to police, a tenant living in the property alerted authorities after hearing a disturbance at around 10 p.m. Officers arrived at the scene, detained the two brothers, and shifted the injured couple to hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead.
Police said the family dispute had reportedly escalated over the father's refusal to transfer property to his sons. Investigators allege that the younger son had visited the house on his birthday, and what began as a family gathering ended in a violent confrontation.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Surendra Nath Tiwari said the argument centred on the family's property and a plot of land for which additional payment was pending.
"The two sons demanded their share of the property, but their father refused. During the argument, they allegedly assaulted both parents by punching and kicking them and also attempted to strangle them," the officer said, adding that the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem examination.
Investigators said the two brothers lived separately in nearby houses after their marriages. However, both of their wives had reportedly returned to their parental homes in recent weeks following repeated domestic disputes.
Police are also examining allegations made by family members that both accused had a history of alcohol abuse and had previously assaulted their parents while intoxicated.
According to relatives, the younger son's birthday was marked by a religious gathering at the family home earlier in the evening, where the mother had organised prayers and prepared food for the occasion. Later that night, an argument reportedly broke out after the parents objected to alcohol consumption inside the house. Police allege the confrontation turned violent, with the brothers fatally assaulting both parents.
The couple's two married daughters have accused their brothers of repeatedly mistreating their parents. In the police complaint, one of the sisters alleged that the accused frequently assaulted their parents after drinking alcohol and had long pressured them over property.
Family members also claimed that the brothers had previously sold their mother's jewellery without permission and had been involved in repeated domestic disputes. Police said these allegations are being examined as part of the investigation.
A relative of the deceased couple described the attack as extremely brutal and called for the strictest legal action against the accused.
A case has been registered under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder at Crossings Republik Police Station based on a complaint filed by one of the victims' daughters.
Police said both accused have been arrested and remain in custody while the investigation continues. Authorities are awaiting the post-mortem report to establish the precise cause of death.
