Husband arrested for strangling wife, falsely claiming she died of stomach pain

Gurugram, Haryana, INDIA: A 21-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly strangling his wife to death after suspecting her of infidelity and then attempting to mislead both her family and the police by claiming she had died from severe stomach pain, police said.

The victim, identified as Shalu, 21, was brought dead to a hospital in Gurugram by her husband, Hemant, in the early hours of Monday, July 27. Hospital staff alerted the police after the woman was declared dead.

According to police, Hemant initially told police that his wife had suddenly developed severe stomach pain, lost consciousness, and died while being taken to the hospital. However, officers who examined the body noticed suspicious injury marks around Shalu's neck, prompting them to suspect foul play.

Police immediately informed the victim's family, who also alleged that the marks indicated she had been strangled.

According to the complaint filed by Shalu's father, the couple had married in 2025 and worked as daily wage labourers while living in rented accommodation near Behalpa Green Farm House on Sohna Road in Gurugram.

The complainant stated that at around 12:30 a.m. on the intervening night of July 26 and 27, Hemant called to say that Shalu had complained of severe stomach pain, become unconscious, and was being taken to a hospital. A short while later, he informed the family that she had died.

When relatives arrived at the hospital, they noticed visible marks around Shalu's neck and alleged that she had been murdered.

Based on the father's complaint, Gurugram Police registered a murder case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Bhondsi Police Station and launched an investigation.

Police arrested Hemant, a resident of Sivara village in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr district, from Gurugram on Tuesday July 28.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed that he had been suspicious of his wife's character. Police said he admitted to strangling Shalu with a scarf during the night before taking her body to the hospital and falsely claiming she had died due to stomach pain.

Investigators have recovered the scarf allegedly used in the crime as part of the investigation.

A senior Gurugram Police officer said the accused allegedly attempted to portray the death as a natural medical emergency in an effort to avoid suspicion. However, the injury marks on the victim's neck and subsequent investigation led to his arrest.
