Mumbai, Maharashtra, INDIA: A 22-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death inside a moving Mumbai local train after a dispute over closing the coach door during heavy rainfall escalated into a fatal confrontation on Tuesday June 23 night.
The victim, identified as Mayank Lohar, a resident of Virar, was travelling in the first-class compartment of a Churchgate–Nallasopara fast local train when he got into an argument with another passenger, Roshan Suvarna, between Goregaon and Kandivali stations.
According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), the dispute began over whether the compartment door should remain open during the rain. As the argument intensified, some passengers allegedly joined the altercation and assaulted Suvarna. Enraged by the confrontation, the accused reportedly pulled out a large knife from his bag and attacked Lohar.
“Between Goregaon and Kandivali, two passengers fought over closing the train's door amid rainfall. During this time, the accused stabbed the victim and fled the scene,” said Datta Khuprekar, Senior Police Inspector of Borivali Railway Police.
Lohar suffered multiple stab wounds to his chest and abdomen. The train reached Borivali station at around 11.04 p.m., where Railway Protection Force (RPF) and GRP personnel rushed to the compartment after receiving information about the incident. The injured man was immediately taken to the Emergency Medical Room at Borivali station and later shifted to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali. However, doctors declared him dead.
A chilling video recorded by passengers after the attack showed the accused carrying a knife and walking through the compartment while bloodstains covered the metal floor. Shocked commuters can be heard saying, “Ye mar diya usko, mar diya” (“He killed him, he actually killed him”). The footage also showed the accused turning back to look at the victim, who lay motionless on the train floor.
Police launched a manhunt using CCTV footage and witness statements. Suvarna, a resident of Mira-Bhayander, was later arrested in Panvel while allegedly attempting to flee to his hometown in Karnataka.
Investigators said the accused allegedly felt insulted after being reprimanded during the argument, leading to the violent attack.
The victim’s family has demanded strict punishment for the accused. Through tears, Lohar’s mother appealed for justice, saying her son never quarrelled with anyone and had not returned home after leaving the previous evening.
His sister also questioned why fellow passengers did not intervene during the attack and called for the harshest possible punishment. “My brother never caused trouble and had his whole life ahead of him,” she said.
Western Railway officials confirmed that CCTV footage and other evidence have been handed over to investigating agencies. Police have registered a murder case and further investigation is underway.
