Surat, Gujarat, INDIA: What initially appeared to be a fatal fall from a second-floor residence in Surat's Chowk Bazar area has turned out to be a chilling case of premeditated murder. Police have arrested a woman and her alleged lover for allegedly killing her husband and attempting to disguise the crime as an accidental death.

The accused, identified as Chandani Kumari Upadhyay (30) and her alleged lover Shulabh Singh Bumm (28), were arrested after an investigation revealed that the death of Janmajay Kumar Tirth Ray (42) was the result of a carefully planned conspiracy.

Janmajay, a native of Deoghar district in Jharkhand, lived with his wife in Rahmat Nagar Society on Ved Road in Surat. On June 8, police received information that he had fallen from the second floor of a residential building and died. Based on the initial account provided by his wife, an Accidental Death (AD) case was registered.

However, the case took a dramatic turn after the postmortem examination conducted at SMIMER Hospital revealed deep sharp-force injuries on the victim's neck. Doctors concluded that Janmajay died from shock and excessive blood loss caused by a cut-throat injury, along with intracranial haemorrhage resulting from the fall.

CCTV Footage Raises Suspicion

Following the postmortem findings, investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the vicinity of the crime scene. During the examination, police noticed suspicious movements by a man later identified as Shulabh Singh, a resident of the same housing society and originally from Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district.

Further investigation revealed that Shulabh was allegedly involved in a romantic relationship with Chandani. Police intensified questioning of the woman, leading to the unraveling of the alleged murder plot.

Alleged Affair Led to Murder Conspiracy

According to police, Chandani and Shulabh had been in a relationship for nearly two years. Investigators said Chandani was unhappy in her marriage after allegedly discovering that her husband had concealed details of a previous marriage. Police also stated that she had accused him of physically assaulting her on multiple occasions.

As their relationship developed, Chandani and Shulabh allegedly began discussing ways to remove Janmajay from their lives so they could be together.

Husband Thrown From Second Floor

According to the police investigation, on the night of June 7, Janmajay went to sleep following an argument with his wife. Around 1 a.m., Chandani allegedly called Shulabh to their residence.

Police claim that the two accused then lifted the sleeping man and pushed him from the second-floor gallery, believing the fall would kill him and make the incident appear to be a suicide or accidental death.

However, approximately 20 minutes later, Chandani allegedly noticed that her husband was still alive.

Throat Slit to Ensure Death

Investigators allege that Chandani informed Shulabh that Janmajay had survived the fall. Fearing that he could expose them, Shulabh allegedly went downstairs carrying a thread-cutting blade and inflicted two deep cuts on the victim's throat while he lay injured on the ground.

The victim suffered massive blood loss and died at the scene.

Police Reconstruct Sequence of Events

Surat Zone-3 Deputy Commissioner of Police Raghav Jain said the case was initially treated as a suicide-related incident. However, the suspicious neck injuries discovered during the postmortem prompted a detailed investigation involving forensic examination, CCTV analysis and technical intelligence gathering.

"The accused allegedly planned to portray the incident as a suicide. When the victim survived the fall, they used a blade to ensure his death," DCP Jain said.

Police said CCTV footage, technical evidence and interrogation of the accused helped establish the sequence of events and expose the alleged conspiracy.

Arrests and Charges

Shulabh Singh was arrested from the Fulwadi area, while Chandani Kumari has also been taken into custody.

Police have registered a case under Sections 103(1), 61(2) and 54 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 135 of the Gujarat Police Act.

Further investigation is underway to gather additional evidence and determine the full extent of the alleged conspiracy.
