Koppal, Karnataka, INDIA: A family dispute allegedly triggered by an argument over online gaming ended in a gruesome tragedy in Karnataka's Koppal district, where an 18-year-old student allegedly stabbed his father, mother and elder sister, leaving two dead and one critically injured.

The incident occurred on the night of June 6 at Hosa Ayodhya village under the jurisdiction of the Gangavathi Rural Police Station.

According to police, Sai Venkat Manideep, an 18-year-old pre-university (PU) student, allegedly attacked his father Venkat Naidu (also known as Yankanna Naidu), 45, his mother Soujanya, and his 19-year-old sister Pragathi with a knife while they were asleep.

Pragathi died on the spot due to multiple stab injuries. Venkat Naidu, who worked as a cook at a private school, was rushed to the Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) Hospital in Ballari but later succumbed to his injuries. Soujanya sustained severe injuries to her head and neck and remains in critical condition.

After the attack, the accused allegedly turned the knife on himself and inflicted injuries to his neck. He is currently undergoing treatment at VIMS Hospital alongside his mother.

According to the complaint filed by the victim's father, Tatarao, the family had dinner together before retiring for the night. Venkat Naidu, Soujanya and their two children slept in one room, while Tatarao and his wife slept in another.

At around 10.30 pm, Tatarao heard loud screams and a commotion coming from his son's room. Unable to open the door, he sought help from neighbours to force it open. They found Venkat Naidu, Soujanya, Pragathi and Sai Venkat Manideep lying injured and bleeding inside the room.

Based on Tatarao's complaint, police registered a case and launched an investigation.

Koppal Superintendent of Police Dr Ram L. Arasiddi said preliminary findings suggest that the attack was carried out by a family member. Investigators were informed that Sai Venkat Manideep allegedly switched off the lights before attacking his parents and sister with a knife while they were asleep.

Police are also examining whether the teenager's alleged addiction to online mobile games may have played a role in the incident. However, officials clarified that the motive has not yet been conclusively established and remains under investigation.

Gangavathi police have inspected the crime scene and are continuing their probe into the circumstances that led to the deadly assault.
