Bengaluru, Karnataka, INDIA: A 23-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her former boyfriend after she repeatedly refused his marriage proposal, in a shocking incident that took place in Bengaluru's Mahalakshmi Layout area on Sunday June 28 night.
The victim, identified as Anjali, a resident of Bhuvaneshwari Nagar in K.P. Agrahara, succumbed to her injuries after being rushed to a nearby hospital. The accused, Rajeev, was arrested within hours of the murder.
According to police, Anjali and Rajeev had known each other for nearly four years. The two were colleagues and had been in a relationship, with both families aware of their association.
However, Anjali's family strongly opposed the marriage after learning that Rajeev had a criminal background and was named in at least three criminal cases. Respecting her family's wishes, Anjali reportedly ended the relationship and began distancing herself from him. Despite the breakup, Rajeev allegedly continued to pressure her to marry him.
Police said Rajeev invited Anjali to meet him for dinner on Sunday June 28 evening. After the meal, the two went to Pipeline Road in the Mahalakshmi Layout area, where he allegedly renewed his marriage proposal. When Anjali refused once again, an argument broke out.
In a fit of rage, Rajeev allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Anjali in the neck before fleeing the scene.
Local residents rushed the critically injured woman to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead during treatment.
The Mahalakshmi Layout Police received information about the incident at around 10.20 p.m. and immediately launched a search operation. Rajeev was apprehended from a nearby area shortly afterward.
During the preliminary investigation, police said the accused appeared unable to accept the end of the relationship and allegedly reacted violently after Anjali rejected his proposal again.
"We have registered a case of murder and taken the accused into custody. Further investigation is underway to ascertain all the facts," a senior police officer said.
Police are currently recording witness statements, collecting forensic evidence, and completing legal formalities as part of the ongoing investigation.
