Bengaluru, Karnataka, INDIA: A 75-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her daughter and grandson following a dispute over family property in Bengaluru's Kengeri area. The accused have been arrested, police said.

The victim, identified as Jayamma, was living with her daughter Bhagyalakshmi (49) and grandson Vikas (26) at an apartment in Subhash Nagar under the jurisdiction of the Kengeri Police Station.

According to investigators, the family had been struggling with alcohol addiction and had allegedly been selling or leasing family properties to fund their drinking habits. Jayamma reportedly opposed these actions, leading to frequent arguments within the household.

Police said that on the night of June 21, a heated quarrel broke out between Jayamma and Bhagyalakshmi over the sale of family property. During the argument, Vikas joined his mother, and the confrontation turned violent. The duo allegedly assaulted Jayamma with a wooden pestle commonly used for preparing food, causing fatal injuries.

Authorities said the accused did not inform anyone about Jayamma's death and allegedly attempted to conceal the crime. Hours later, Vikas reportedly called a friend and asked him to bring alcohol, claiming that his grandmother had died and that he was emotionally disturbed.

When the friend arrived at the apartment, he found Jayamma's body lying inside the house and immediately alerted the police. Officers rushed to the scene, uncovered evidence of foul play, and launched an investigation.

During the probe, police learned that residents of the apartment complex had previously complained about frequent drunken disturbances caused by Bhagyalakshmi and her son. Vikas had reportedly been admitted to a de-addiction centre but had resumed drinking after returning home.

Based on the evidence collected, Kengeri police registered a murder case and arrested Bhagyalakshmi and Vikas. As both accused were allegedly under the influence of alcohol, they were admitted to a hospital for treatment. The investigation is ongoing.
