New Delhi, INDIA: In a chilling incident reported from North West Delhi, a 26-year-old man was allegedly set on fire by his wife and mother-in-law in the Jahangirpuri area late on Sunday May 17 night. The victim, identified as Deepansh Chaudhary, succumbed to severe burn injuries during treatment at a hospital.

According to the police, the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Delhi Police's Jahangirpuri police station. The victim's wife and mother-in-law have been taken into custody, and a detailed investigation is underway.

Victim Named Wife and Mother-in-Law in Dying Declaration

Before his death, Deepansh reportedly gave a dying declaration to a police officer, alleging that his wife and mother-in-law had poured an inflammable substance on him and set him ablaze. He further claimed that two to three other individuals were involved in the attack.

In his statement, Deepansh also alleged that the motive behind the assault was linked to his wife's alleged extramarital affairs with multiple men.

Eyewitness Account

A woman residing in the same building recounted the horrifying sequence of events. She said the family initially believed that a fire had broken out outside the building or that it was caused by a short circuit.

However, neighbours soon informed them that the blaze was inside the house. When they rushed out, they saw Deepansh descending the staircase engulfed in flames and without clothes. He collapsed at the bottom of the stairs, his body severely charred.

The witness said the victim remained conscious for nearly 10 minutes and was able to speak before emergency services arrived. Since calls to the 112 emergency helpline reportedly did not go through immediately, the residents contacted the Station House Officer directly and arranged for an ambulance.

She further alleged that when Deepansh's family was informed about the incident, his wife refused to come downstairs and reportedly said that he should be "left to burn."

Police Investigation Underway

Police officials said the exact sequence of events and the circumstances leading to the murder are being thoroughly investigated. Forensic teams have examined the scene, and investigators are questioning the detained mother-daughter duo.

Authorities are also verifying the victim's allegations regarding the involvement of additional suspects and the possible motive related to marital discord.
