Man axes father, wife to death; 3-year-old daughter battles for life

Lohardaga, Jharkhand, INDIA:  A domestic dispute turned gruesomely violent in Jharkhand’s Lohardaga district on Monday May 25 morning after a man allegedly hacked his father and wife to death with an axe before critically injuring his three-year-old daughter.

The incident took place in Sengra Toli village under the Bhandra police station limits. The
accused, identified as Sandeep Oraon, was arrested from the scene soon after the attack.
Police identified the deceased as Surendra Oraon (60) and Sujata Oraon (27), while the
injured child, Riyanshi, is undergoing treatment at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences
(RIMS) in Ranchi.

According to police, the violence erupted around 5 am following an argument inside the
family home. Investigators said Sandeep allegedly picked up an axe during the altercation
and first attacked his father, Surendra. When his wife Sujata tried to intervene, he allegedly
turned on her and struck her repeatedly.
Police said the accused then attacked his three-year-old daughter, leaving her with severe
injuries.

Hearing screams from the house, neighbours rushed to the spot and found Surendra and
Sujata lying dead, while the child was found critically injured in a pool of blood. Villagers
immediately alerted the police.

Bhandra police station officer-in-charge Manoj Kumar Gupta reached the spot with a team
and took the accused into custody. The blood-stained axe used in the crime was also
recovered from the house.

The injured child was first taken to the Community Health Centre in Bhandra for emergency
treatment before being referred to RIMS Ranchi due to the seriousness of her condition.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination.

Police said preliminary investigation points to an on-going family dispute as the trigger
behind the killings, though all angles are being examined.

“Preliminary investigation suggests the incident was the fallout of a family dispute. The
accused is being questioned to ascertain the exact reason behind the attack,” a police official
said.

Local residents claimed Sandeep had been behaving unusually in recent weeks and that
frequent quarrels had broken out within the family. Police are continuing further investigation
into the case.
