Angul, Odisha, INDIA: In a shocking case of family violence, a 60-year-old man allegedly killed his 35-year-old son after the latter reportedly attacked his mother with an axe. The accused then buried the body in a nearby forest in Odisha’s Angul district. Police have detained three family members in connection with the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Sanjiv Behera, also known as Kuja Behera, a resident of Arkil village under the jurisdiction of the Rengali Dam Site Police Station. The accused father, Muralidhar Behera (60), and mother, Kanchan Behera (55), are currently being questioned by police. Sanjiv’s first wife has also been detained to determine her possible role in the case.
According to police, Sanjiv had two wives and had been living separately from his parents in the same village for the past year following ongoing family disputes.
The incident occurred on May 9 when Sanjiv visited his parents’ home. During the visit, an argument broke out between him and his father over a family issue. Police said that in the course of the altercation, Sanjiv allegedly attacked his mother Kanchan with an axe, causing injuries.
Enraged by the assault on his wife, Muralidhar reportedly snatched the axe from his son and struck him repeatedly on the head, killing him on the spot.
After the murder, Muralidhar and Kanchan allegedly transported the body to the nearby Baisamunda forest, where they buried it in an attempt to conceal the crime.
The incident came to light when Sanjiv’s second wife, Radharani, went to his parents’ house later that evening to inquire about her husband’s whereabouts. Muralidhar allegedly confessed to her that he had killed Sanjiv and buried his body in the forest.
Frightened by the revelation, Radharani fled to her parental home in Motanga and informed her family. However, the matter was not reported immediately. On Monday May 11, her family approached Motanga Police, who subsequently alerted Rengali Police.
Based on a complaint lodged by Radharani, police registered a murder case and launched an investigation. Acting on the information provided, officers recovered the highly decomposed body from Baisamunda forest six days after the incident.
The body was exhumed and sent to Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College and Hospital for forensic and toxicological examination.
Police said further investigation is underway to establish the exact sequence of events and determine the involvement of all detained individuals.
