Buldhana, Maharashtra, INDIA: In a chilling case of suspected honour killing, the Maharashtra Police have arrested a 55-year-old man and his son for allegedly murdering their newly-married daughter and sister, before burning and mutilating her body in an attempt to destroy evidence.
The gruesome crime was cracked by the Local Crime Branch within 12 days of launching a multi-district investigation spanning Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
Partially Burnt, Headless Body Found
The case came to light on April 26, when a partially burnt and headless body of an unidentified woman was discovered near a riverbank in Rajura farmland under the jurisdiction of Jalgaon Jamod Police Station. A human skull was found about 100 metres away, sending shockwaves through the area.
Following a complaint lodged by a local resident, police registered a case and initiated an investigation. Given the brutality and sensitive nature of the crime, Buldhana Superintendent of Police Nilesh Tambe assigned the case to the Local Crime Branch.
Investigation Across Multiple Districts
Under the leadership of Police Inspector Sunil Ambolkar, teams fanned out across Buldhana, Akola, Amravati, and Burhanpur, scrutinising missing persons records and analysing technical and intelligence inputs.
A breakthrough came on May 9 when investigators traced a missing person complaint lodged at Khaknar Police Station on May 1. The complaint had been filed by Bapuram Kalemkar, who claimed that his daughter had been missing since April 25.
Victim Identified as Shivani Kalemkar
Police identified the deceased as Shivani Bapuram Kalemkar, a resident of Khadki village in Burhanpur district.
Shivani had married Prakash Bhilavekar of Kharya Tembhur village in Dharni taluka of Amravati district on April 15. She had recently returned to her parental home in Khadki village.
Alleged Affair Triggered the Killing
During questioning, police found inconsistencies in the family's conduct, particularly their lack of follow-up after filing the missing complaint. Investigators suspect the complaint was lodged solely to divert suspicion.
According to police, Shivani's father, Bapuram Kalemkar, and her brother, Ajay Kalemkar, confessed that they were enraged because Shivani allegedly continued a relationship with her cousin even after her marriage.
On the night of April 23, Bapuram allegedly assaulted Shivani with a bamboo stick, killing her on the spot, police said.
Body Transported Over 100 Kilometres
Investigators said the accused kept the body inside their home for nearly a day before transporting it on a motorcycle for more than 100 kilometres from Khadki village in Burhanpur district to Rajura farmland in Jalgaon Jamod taluka of Buldhana district.
To conceal her identity, the accused allegedly set the body on fire, severed the head, and dumped the body parts at separate locations. They also disposed of the bamboo stick used in the assault and blood-stained clothing in a nearby forest area.
Arrest and Further Investigation
Both accused were arrested on Sunday May 10 and handed over to the Jalgaon Jamod Police Station for further investigation.
Police are continuing to probe the case and are gathering forensic and circumstantial evidence to strengthen the prosecution in what is being treated as a brutal instance of so-called honour killing.
