Bengaluru, Karnataka, INDIA: A 27-year-old woman has been arrested on April 21 for allegedly murdering her boyfriend after luring him to her house under the pretext of a “Western-style proposal” and then setting him on fire.

The incident took place in Anjananagar under the limits of the Byadarahalli police station. The accused, identified as Prema, allegedly called her boyfriend Kiran to her residence when no family members were present.

According to police, the couple had been in a relationship for nearly two years and worked together at a mobile service provider store in Rajajinagar. Police suspect the relationship had deteriorated after Kiran, a native of Chikkanayakanahalli in Tumakuru district, allegedly refused to marry her and had begun distancing himself.

Police said Prema allegedly told Kiran she wanted to surprise him with a “Western-style” proposal. Under that pretext, she blindfolded him and tied his hands and legs. Investigators believe she had already arranged petrol and kerosene in advance and, after restraining him, poured the inflammable liquid over him before setting him on fire. Unable to escape, Kiran died on the spot.

Neighbours reportedly rushed to alert authorities after hearing screams and seeing smoke coming from the house. Fire and emergency personnel reached the scene, but Kiran could not be saved.

Police initially treated the case as a suspected suicide after Prema allegedly claimed she was in the bathroom when the incident occurred and that Kiran had set himself on fire. However, inconsistencies in her statements, CCTV footage, and the absence of any flammable substance brought by the victim led investigators to suspect foul play. Police also found evidence suggesting that the petrol and kerosene had been procured in advance.

Investigators have also seized the accused’s mobile phone, which allegedly contains a recording of Kiran’s final moments. Police are now probing whether the murder was entirely premeditated and if there were any additional motives behind the killing.
