Chennai, Tamil Nadu, INDIA: A 29-year-old woman lost vision in her left eye after her husband allegedly threw toilet cleaning acid on her in Pallavaram, in a shocking incident linked to an ongoing divorce dispute.

The victim, identified as Sana Fathima, a resident of Bharathi Nagar near Pallavaram, had married Mohammed Ali of Anakaputhur in 2020 following a love relationship. The couple has a four-year-old son.

According to police sources, Fathima had been living separately and had approached a court seeking divorce, citing domestic abuse. She alleged that her husband was addicted to alcohol and would frequently return home intoxicated, subjecting her to physical and mental harassment. This reportedly led to escalating tensions between the couple.

The Attack

The incident occurred on March 15 when Fathima was near her mother’s residence in Pallavaram. Police said the accused intercepted her while she was alone and poured toilet cleaning acid directly onto her face.

As the victim screamed in pain and attempted to escape, the accused allegedly chased her before a passerby intervened. The bystander managed to rescue Fathima and rushed her to a nearby private hospital for emergency treatment.

Injuries and Treatment

Doctors confirmed that the corrosive substance severely damaged Fathima’s left eye, resulting in permanent vision loss. She is currently undergoing treatment for burn injuries sustained in the attack.

The Pallavaram police have registered a case and launched a manhunt to trace the accused who is currently absconding. Officials said efforts are underway to apprehend him at the earliest.
