New Delhi: A 32-year-old woman was allegedly bludgeoned to death by her husband using a mini LPG cylinder inside their residence in southeast Delhi’s Pul Prahladpur area on Sunday March 29 night, police said.

The victim, identified as Poonam, was attacked during a domestic dispute at their flat in DDA Janta Flats. According to police, neighbours alerted authorities after hearing loud screams and a commotion from the house.

A police team from Pul Prahladpur police station reached the spot around 9 pm and found the woman lying in a pool of blood with severe head injuries. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari said the accused, Suresh Kumar (35), was present at the scene and was immediately taken into custody. A case of murder has been registered under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police said the couple had been married since 2020 and had recently moved to Delhi from Rajasthan’s Churu district about a month ago. Suresh had reportedly secured employment at a container depot in Tughlakabad and rented the flat in Pul Prahladpur.

Preliminary investigation suggests the incident was triggered by an argument over financial support for the accused’s brother. The dispute escalated, during which Suresh allegedly picked up a small LPG cylinder and struck Poonam multiple times on the head, causing fatal injuries.

The couple has two daughters — a four-year-old who lives with relatives in Churu, and a younger child, aged around one-and-a-half years, who was present in the flat at the time of the incident.

Police sources said the accused continued the assault even after the victim stopped responding. After the incident, he allegedly remained seated near the body along with the child until neighbours intervened.

Forensic teams have examined the crime scene, and the weapon used in the assault has been recovered. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and further investigation is underway to establish the exact sequence of events.

Officials added that the couple had a history of marital discord, with frequent arguments reported by neighbours.
