Mumbai, Maharashtra, INDIA: A 42-year-old electrician was arrested for allegedly killing his wife by pushing her in front of a moving suburban train at Mulund railway station, following a domestic dispute over divorce.
The accused, identified as Rajkumar alias Raju Gupta, allegedly committed the crime on Saturday March 14 morning at Platform No. 1 while the couple’s 13-year-old son was present at the scene.
According to the Kurla Government Railway Police (GRP), the victim, Pushpa Gupta (36), had been facing frequent domestic conflicts with her husband. She had earlier filed a non-cognisable complaint against him at Mulund police station and had temporarily moved to her hometown in Uttar Pradesh with her elder son.
Days before the incident, Pushpa returned to Mumbai with her brother, Kamlesh Kumar, an Army personnel, who had attempted to mediate between the couple.
On the day of the incident, the trio had gone to Mulund station to travel to Kalwa. However, Kamlesh realised he had left behind important documents at home and returned with his nephew to retrieve them. Police said the accused locked them inside the house before heading to the station.
At the station, Gupta allegedly confronted Pushpa and tried to persuade her to return home. During the argument, she reportedly reiterated her decision to seek a divorce. In the ensuing confrontation, he allegedly pushed her in front of an approaching local train.
Passengers alerted railway authorities, who rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
The accused fled the scene with his younger son and travelled across multiple railway routes -- via Thane, CSMT, Dadar, and Virar -- before boarding a Gujarat-bound train. Acting on technical surveillance and route tracking, a Railway Police STF team apprehended him in Surat.
Police confirmed that the incident was captured on CCTV cameras at the station. Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s brother, a case of murder has been registered against the accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Further investigation is underway.
