Pune, Maharashtra, INDIA: A 23-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death in Pune’s Kothrud area after members of a minor girl’s family attacked him over his friendship with her, police said. The incident has sparked outrage and renewed concerns about law and order in the city.
The deceased was identified as Nagesh Sanjay Jadhav (23), a resident of Wadarwadi in the Shivajinagar area. He worked as an office assistant at a private establishment and was helping his mother support the family.
According to the police, the incident occurred on the evening of March 14. At around 7.15 pm, Jadhav received a phone call and immediately left his home on his motorcycle. Investigators believe the call was made from the mobile phone of a minor girl with whom Jadhav was reportedly friends and frequently spoke over the phone.
Nearly 45 minutes later, Jadhav’s mother, Surekha Jadhav (45), received a call from her son’s phone. The caller allegedly abused her and said that Jadhav had been severely beaten. The caller also issued a threat, telling her to come and take her son within 10 minutes or they would throw him down.
Alarmed by the call, Surekha rushed to the Megacity area in Kothrud along with relatives. When they arrived, they found a large crowd gathered outside the building. They were informed that Jadhav was being assaulted on the terrace.
Upon reaching the terrace, the family found Jadhav lying on the ground with severe injuries. His clothes were torn and wooden sticks were scattered around the spot. Eyewitnesses later told police that a group of people, including both men and women, had allegedly beaten him with sticks and also kicked and punched him.
Jadhav was immediately taken in an autorickshaw to Ratna Hospital in Shivajinagar. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, he was later shifted to Sassoon General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Before losing consciousness, Jadhav reportedly told his mother that he had been assaulted by the girl’s family members after being called to their residence.
Following the incident, Surekha lodged a complaint at Kothrud Police Station. Based on the FIR, police registered a case against 10 members of the girl’s family under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 103, 115(2), 352, 351(2), 189(2), 191(2) and 190.
Police said six people, including the minor girl’s mother, have been arrested so far, while one accused remains absconding.
Senior Police Inspector Sandeep Deshmane said that preliminary investigations indicate the attack was triggered by the victim’s contact with the minor girl.
“Prima facie, the accused attacked the victim because he was meeting and talking to the girl. Further investigation is underway,” Deshmane said.
Police said further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.
