Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, INDIA: What initially appeared to be a tragic hit-and-run accident in Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar district has turned out to be a meticulously planned murder allegedly orchestrated by the victim’s wife with the help of her former boyfriend and accomplices.
The incident, now being dubbed “Rajasthan’s Honeymoon Murder,” has drawn chilling parallels with the Meghalaya honeymoon killing case that shocked the country last year.
Incident on January 30
According to police, the incident occurred on the evening of January 30, when Ashish and his wife Anju, who had been married for just three months, went out for a walk after dinner.
At around 9 pm, police received information that a couple was lying unconscious on a roadside. They were rushed to a nearby Community Health Centre (CHC), where doctors declared Ashish dead on arrival.
Superintendent of Police Amrita Duhan said the initial report suggested that the couple had been hit by an unidentified vehicle.
“We treated it as a hit-and-run case and conducted a detailed inspection of the spot. The Forensic Science Laboratory team was also called to examine the scene,” Duhan said.
Wife’s Version Raises Suspicion
Anju, 23, told the police that a speeding vehicle had struck them during their walk. She also claimed that unidentified robbers had snatched her gold jewellery before fleeing.
However, investigators soon noticed glaring inconsistencies between her statement and physical evidence at the scene.
The post-mortem report revealed that Ashish had multiple injury marks and showed signs of strangulation, indicating assault rather than a road accident. In contrast, Anju had no serious injuries.
Police also found that she kept changing her statements during questioning.
“These contradictions raised strong suspicion,” Duhan said.
Conspiracy with Ex-Boyfriend
Further investigation revealed that Anju had been in constant contact with her former boyfriend, Sanju, even after her marriage. Call records confirmed frequent communication between the two.
Police sources said that Anju was unhappy in her marriage and had returned to her hometown shortly after the wedding, where she reunited with Sanju. During this period, they allegedly planned Ashish’s murder.
“Anju had started accompanying her husband regularly on his post-dinner walks,” Duhan said. “This was part of the plan.”
On January 30, she reportedly led Ashish to an isolated stretch of road, where Sanju and his associates—Rocky alias Rohit and Badal alias Siddharth—were hiding.
The attackers allegedly assaulted and strangled Ashish before staging the scene to resemble a road accident.
Attempt to Stage Robbery
To strengthen the fake hit-and-run narrative, Anju allegedly handed over her mobile phone and earrings to the accused, making it appear as though she had been robbed.
After the attack, she pretended to be unconscious and waited for help to arrive.
However, the injury patterns on Ashish’s body and the absence of injuries on Anju exposed the fabricated story.
Arrests Made
Based on forensic evidence, call records, and interrogation, police arrested Anju, Sanju, and the two accomplices. All four have been booked on charges of murder and criminal conspiracy.
Further investigation is underway.
Parallels with Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder
The case has drawn comparisons with the 2023 Meghalaya honeymoon murder, in which Raja Raghuvanshi was killed during his honeymoon.
Raja’s wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, along with her lover Raj Kushwaha, had allegedly hired three men to murder him near Wei Sawdong Falls. His body was thrown into a gorge and the incident was initially made to look like an accident.
Sonam was later arrested in Uttar Pradesh, along with her accomplices.
A Disturbing Pattern
Police officials said both cases reflect a disturbing pattern of crimes involving close family members and premeditated attempts to disguise murder as accidents.
“The investigation highlights how carefully planned crimes can be exposed through scientific and consistent policing,” a senior officer said.
