Bengaluru, Karnataka, INDIA: A 33-year-old US-returned software engineer has been arrested for allegedly murdering his parents at their villa in Vignan Nagar, near HAL Township in east Bengaluru, on Wednesday February 11 morning.

The accused, identified as Rohan Chandra Bhat, is charged with fatally stabbing his father, Naveen Chandra Bhat (60), a retired Navy captain, and his mother, Dr. Shyamala Bhat (55), a dentist. The couple resided at Villa No. 112 in Adarsh Vista.

According to police, the incident occurred around 7.30 am following a heated argument between Rohan and his parents. Preliminary investigations indicate that Rohan allegedly attacked them with a kitchen knife, inflicting multiple stab wounds to the abdomen and other parts of their bodies.

Hearing the commotion, neighbours rushed to the house and shifted the injured couple to Manipal Hospitals on Old Airport Road. However, doctors declared them brought dead at around 8.15 am.

Dr. Madhavi Nair, a neighbour and a doctor at Manipal Hospitals, lodged a complaint with the HAL police, who subsequently took Rohan into custody.

A senior police officer said Rohan had been working as a software engineer in the United States before returning to Bengaluru three years ago. Details regarding his overseas employment and the reasons for his return are yet to be ascertained.

Police said Rohan, who is unmarried, had been working independently on software projects and was seeking financial support to scale up his ventures. He reportedly suffered from anxiety issues and had been pressuring his parents for funds after facing difficulties in raising capital. The couple allegedly expressed their inability to meet his financial demands, leading to frequent quarrels.

Due to ongoing disputes, Rohan had recently moved to a rented accommodation in Varthur. Police said he returned to his parents’ villa on Monday night and again demanded money. The confrontation escalated on Wednesday morning, culminating in the fatal attack.

Rohan has been produced before a court. Police said he is yet to be questioned in detail. The couple’s daughter, who lives in the United States, has been informed of the incident and is expected to arrive in Bengaluru on Thursday.

The bodies have been shifted to Bowring Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted after the daughter’s arrival. Further investigation is underway.
