Thief files police complaint after being assaulted by residents during theft attempt

Bengaluru, Karnataka, INDIA: In a bizarre incident reported under the jurisdiction of the Sampigehalli police station, a man caught attempting theft at a residential apartment later approached the police to file a complaint after being beaten by residents.

The accused has been identified as Azghar Khan, an auto-rickshaw driver by profession. According to police, Azghar, facing financial difficulties and influenced by friends who were allegedly earning easy money through theft, decided to commit his first crime.

On January 31, Azghar and two associates allegedly entered the compound of an apartment near Chokkanahalli Main Road in Chokkanahalli with the intention of stealing iron and electrical materials. Late at night, the trio reportedly climbed the compound wall and began their attempt.

However, they were noticed by a resident couple, who questioned their presence. An argument followed, during which Azghar allegedly tried to assault the couple, triggering a commotion in the area.

Hearing the noise, other residents rushed to the spot. Taking advantage of the situation, Azghar’s two accomplices fled in his auto-rickshaw, abandoning him at the scene. The residents allegedly caught Azghar and assaulted him with wooden objects in anger.

During the scuffle, police said one of the accomplices also struck a male resident on the head with a beer bottle, causing injuries. The shattered glass reportedly caused cuts on the woman’s cheek.

After managing to escape, Azghar sought medical treatment at a nearby hospital. He later went to the Sampigehalli police station and lodged a complaint, alleging that he had been assaulted by unidentified residents during the incident. He also accused his associates of abandoning him.

Police registered an FIR based on his complaint and launched an investigation into the case. Officers said they were surprised by the unusual situation in which the accused himself approached the police.

Investigators are now probing the roles of the absconding accomplices and examining allegations of assault from both sides. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
