Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: A newlywed woman has been arrested for allegedly killing her husband and attempting to pass the murder off as a suicide, just two months after their wedding, police said.
The victim, Jitendra Kumar Yadav (33), was found hanging inside his rented house in the Izzatnagar area of Bareilly on January 26. Initially believed to be a case of suicide, a post-mortem examination later revealed that he had died due to strangulation, prompting police to register a case of murder.
According to investigators, Jitendra’s wife, Jyoti, allegedly strangled him while her parents and brother restrained him. After his death, the family is accused of hanging the body from a window grill using a muffler to make the incident appear as a suicide.
Three accused — Jyoti, her father Kalicharan, and her mother Chameli — have been arrested. Her brother Deepak is currently absconding, and police efforts are underway to trace him.
Nine-Year Relationship Ended in Tragedy
Police said Jitendra and Jyoti had been in a relationship for nine years since their student days. They were married on November 25 last year in a ceremony conducted according to Hindu customs, with the consent of both families.
After the marriage, the couple shifted to a rented house in Girja Shankar Colony under the Izzatnagar police station limits.
However, within weeks, disputes reportedly began, mainly over financial issues. Investigators said Jitendra had withdrawn ₹20,000 from Jyoti’s bank account and lost the amount in online gambling, leading to frequent arguments.
Incident on January 26
On January 26, Jyoti confronted her husband over the missing money, following which a heated argument broke out and turned violent consideration, police said.
During the altercation, Jyoti allegedly called her parents and brother to the house. Soon after their arrival, the family reportedly restrained Jitendra, holding his arms and legs, while Jyoti strangled him.
“When Jitendra stopped responding, the family realised he was dead and decided to stage the scene as a suicide,” a senior police officer said.
The body was then tied with a muffler and suspended from a window grill. Neighbours were informed that Jitendra had taken his own life.
Case Reopened After Complaint
When police reached the spot, the case was initially treated as a suspected suicide. No immediate signs of foul play were noticed.
However, Jitendra’s brother, Ajay Kumar, later lodged a complaint expressing suspicion over the death. Acting on the complaint, police registered a case of abetment to suicide and ordered a post-mortem examination.
The autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was strangulation, ruling out suicide. Following this, police converted the case into a murder investigation.
Confession and Background
During interrogation, Jyoti allegedly confessed to her role in the crime and detailed the sequence of events.
Police said Jitendra worked as a contract employee at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly, while Jyoti was employed as a contract bus conductor with the Uttar Pradesh Road Transport Corporation.
Investigators said financial disputes and mounting tension had strained the marriage in its early months.
“According to her statement, the argument went out of control, leading her to call her family. The situation escalated, resulting in the crime,” an officer said.
Search Continues for Absconding Accused
Police have launched a search operation to arrest Deepak, Jyoti’s brother, who remains at large.
Further investigation is underway, and police said additional evidence is being collected to strengthen the case.
