Ranchi, Jharkhand, INDIA: In a shocking incident that has sparked public outrage, a 24-year-old man was allegedly dragged for nearly two kilometres on the bonnet of a speeding luxury car after confronting the driver over a road accident in Ranchi on Tuesday February 17. The accused, identified as High Court advocate Manoj Tandon, was later detained by police following a chase across the city.
The incident occurred near Rajendra Chowk. According to officials and the victim’s family, the luxury car first struck a woman in the area. Shortly afterwards, it allegedly hit the motorcycle of Mawaz Khan, a TCS employee, who was returning home after dropping his younger brother at a matriculation examination centre near Kendriya Vidyalaya.
Mawaz’s father, Arman Khan, said the motorcycle was hit from the rear, damaging the brake pad and other parts of the newly purchased Royal Enfield. “My son only asked the driver to repair the damage or compensate him. Instead of resolving the matter, the driver accelerated,” he alleged.
As the vehicle sped forward, Mawaz ended up on the bonnet and was dragged for nearly two kilometres. A video recorded by Mawaz during the ordeal later surfaced on social media, intensifying public anger. Home Guard personnel stationed along the route reportedly attempted to intercept the car, but the driver did not stop.
Arman Khan further alleged that his son was later taken near the accused’s residence, where he was assaulted by five to six individuals, including the driver’s son and security guards. “My son narrowly escaped death. We demand strict action and immediate arrest,” he said, adding that local residents and panchayat members gathered outside Doranda police station demanding action.
On receiving information, police launched an operation, chased the vehicle and rescued the injured youth. He was sent for medical examination, and an FIR has been registered. The accused lawyer was detained, and the investigation is ongoing.
Police officials described the incident as an accident that escalated. “The bike was damaged, and the rider demanded that it be repaired or compensated. The matter escalated from there,” a senior officer at Doranda police station said.
The matter also reached the Jharkhand High Court. The Bar Association informed the court that the lawyer had been detained and sought protection for him from potential mob violence. A bench headed by Chief Justice M.S. Sonak observed that no one is above the law and directed the police to act strictly in accordance with legal provisions.
The court declined to grant immediate relief to the accused but instructed the state’s Advocate General to coordinate with police to ensure his safety within lawful limits.
Crowds continued to gather outside Doranda police station through the evening, demanding stringent action against the accused. Police said further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
