Hoshiarpur, Punjab, INDIA: A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan has been arrested for allegedly beating his wife to death at their home in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district and attempting to portray her death as an accidental fall from the roof, police said.
The accused, identified as Amarjit Singh, was on leave before joining a new posting in Kashmir. He had recently been transferred from Odisha, according to police.
His wife, Rama, had been married to him for around 12 years. The couple have two children, a son and a daughter.
Family Told Rama Had Fallen From Roof
According to a complaint filed by Rama’s father, Ram Chand, the family was informed around 4 am on August 14 that Rama had fallen from the roof of her house and had been taken to Civil Hospital in Hajipur.
When her relatives reached the hospital, however, they found that Rama had died.
Ram Chand told police that family members noticed multiple injury marks on Rama’s body, raising suspicions about the claim that she had suffered the injuries in a fall.
He alleged that Amarjit had assaulted Rama and that the story about her falling from the roof was an attempt to make her death appear accidental.
Father Alleges Years of Abuse
Rama’s father further alleged that his daughter had faced harassment and physical abuse during her marriage.
According to the complaint, Amarjit frequently remained away from home because of his BSF duties. Ram Chand said he and his wife had at one point stayed with their daughter, but Amarjit allegedly forced them to leave.
He also alleged that Amarjit consumed alcohol frequently and often quarrelled with Rama.
The marital dispute had previously been discussed before the village panchayat, but the situation did not improve, according to the family.
Police said Amarjit had returned home on leave shortly before the incident. Rama’s family alleged that she was assaulted on the night of August 13 and later died from her injuries.
Two Relatives Also Booked
Based on Ram Chand’s complaint, Hajipur police registered a murder case and arrested Amarjit Singh.
Police have also booked Amarjit’s uncle, Kuldeep Kuki, and aunt, Sonia, after Rama’s family alleged that they were involved in the incident and the subsequent attempt to cover it up.
The two relatives have not yet been arrested and police are searching for them.
Hajipur Police Station House Officer Inspector Harprem Singh said further investigation into the circumstances surrounding Rama’s death was underway.
Rama’s body was handed over to her family following the post-mortem examination.
Police have not yet publicly disclosed the detailed post-mortem findings.
