Bengaluru, Karnataka, INDIA: A 45-year-old woman died after being attacked by chain-snatchers in Huskuru village near Nelamangala taluk in Karnataka early Monday February 9 morning, police said.

The victim, identified as Jyothi, was sweeping in front of her house around 5.30 a.m. as part of her daily routine when two unidentified men on a motorcycle approached her. The accused allegedly sprayed a chemical substance on her face to incapacitate her before forcibly snatching her gold mangalsutra and earrings.

Eyewitnesses said the sudden attack caused Jyothi to collapse on the spot. The attackers fled immediately after committing the crime. Neighbours and family members rushed to her aid and shifted her to a private hospital in Nelamangala, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Family members later noticed injuries on her face and marks on her hands. They also reported foam around her mouth, raising suspicions that she may have died due to suffocation caused by the spray. Police said she may have also sustained injuries after being pushed and hitting a sump lid near the house entrance.

The body has been sent to Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Personnel from the Madanayakanahalli Police Station visited the spot and conducted a detailed inspection. A case has been registered, and a special team has been formed to trace the culprits. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being analysed as part of the investigation.

Speaking to reporters, Jyothi’s sister, Neethu, said the attackers assaulted her near the house door before robbing her and fleeing. “Her face hit the sump lid, causing injuries. We do not suspect anyone in particular. Chain-snatching incidents have increased in recent days,” she said.

The incident has triggered fear among residents of Huskuru and surrounding villages. Locals have demanded increased police patrolling and stricter action against criminals.

Police said investigation is underway and assured that the accused will be arrested soon.
