Siddapur, Karnataka, INDIA: A long-running family dispute linked to an alleged illicit relationship between a married woman and a local astrologer turned deadly in Siddapura taluk of Uttara Kannada district, leading to the brutal killing of a man and leaving two others critically injured. Police have arrested seven persons in connection with the incident, including the astrologer, the woman involved, and her father.

The deceased has been identified as Vasanth Naik (41), who was fatally stabbed while attempting to protect his younger brother and niece during a violent attack at his residence in Averaguppa village. His brother Mahesh Naik (37) and a neighbour Kumar (35) sustained serious injuries and are undergoing treatment at Meggan Hospital in Shivamogga.

Background of the Dispute

According to police, Mahesh Naik, who works in Bengaluru, had been living separately from his wife Suchitra, who stayed in Siddapura with their two daughters. Investigators said Suchitra had initially approached a local astrologer, Kamalakar Bhat, popularly known as “Guruji,” for guidance regarding family issues.

Over time, frequent interactions allegedly developed into an extramarital relationship. When family members learned about the relationship, Mahesh returned home and confronted his wife. However, after he resumed work in Bengaluru, Suchitra reportedly renewed contact with the astrologer.

About six months ago, Suchitra left her marital home with her daughters and began living at Bhat’s residence. Police said the children were subjected to mental stress and harassment during this period.

Daughter’s Appeal for Help

The elder daughter, Sumashree, allegedly questioned her mother about the relationship and was threatened. Fearing for her safety, she sent a distress message to her father, stating, “Dad, save me or I will die.”

Alarmed, Mahesh brought his daughter to Shivamogga and later kept her at his elder brother Vasanth’s house in Averaguppa for protection.

Violent Attack

Police said tensions escalated after Suchitra learned that her daughter was staying with her uncle. On the night of the incident, she allegedly arrived at Vasanth’s house along with Kamalakar Bhat, her father Lokanath Chaulappa, and several associates.

According to a complaint filed by Vasanth’s wife, Sandhya Naik, the group demanded that the girl be handed over immediately. An argument ensued, which soon turned violent.

The accused allegedly attacked the family with sharp weapons. Vasanth Naik was stabbed multiple times while trying to intervene and collapsed at the spot. He died while being taken to hospital. Mahesh and Kumar were also seriously injured during the assault.

Police Action and Investigation

Following the incident, Siddapur police registered a case under Crime No. 23/26 and launched a manhunt. Seven accused, including Kamalakar Bhat, Suchitra, and Lokanath Chaulappa, have been arrested. The vehicle used by the attackers has also been seized.

Superintendent of Police Deepak visited the crime scene and reviewed the investigation.

“We have secured the main accused and are interrogating them to establish the extent of planning and conspiracy behind the attack,” a senior officer said.

Cases have been registered under sections related to murder, attempt to murder, and criminal conspiracy under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police are examining call records, previous complaints, and movement details of the accused.

Shock and Demand for Justice

The incident has shocked residents of the otherwise peaceful village. Locals have demanded strict punishment for those responsible. Police have increased security in the area to prevent any retaliatory violence.

Officials said a detailed charge sheet will be filed after completion of custodial interrogation and forensic analysis. The investigation is ongoing.
