Pune, Maharashtra, INDIA: In a shocking incident linked to prolonged domestic distress, a woman allegedly killed her 11-year-old son and critically injured her 13-year-old daughter in Wagholi area of Pune on Tuesday January 27 morning.

The incident occurred around 9 am in a lane near Olive Society on Baif Road, when the woman reportedly attacked the children inside their rented house in the absence of other adult family members.

According to police, the accused, identified as Soni Santosh Jaibhay, slit her son Sairaj’s throat with a sickle, killing him on the spot. She then repeatedly attacked her daughter, Dhanashree, who sustained severe injuries but managed to escape and lock herself inside the washroom. The injured girl cried for help through a window, alerting neighbours.

Residents rushed to the spot and found the house splattered with blood, with the accused sitting inside in a distressed state. The neighbours immediately informed the police, who arrived, detained the woman and seized the weapon used in the crime.

The injured girl was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) Chilumula Rajnikanth said preliminary investigations suggest that the woman had planned to kill her children and then take her own life due to ongoing domestic problems.

“Prima facie, it appears that the accused was under severe mental stress arising from her husband’s alcohol addiction and frequent domestic disputes. While the son died, the daughter survived with serious injuries. Her suicide attempt failed, and she was taken into custody,” he said.

Police Inspector Sarjerao Kumbhar of Wagholi police station said a case has been registered and investigations are underway to establish the exact sequence of events and motive.

“The family had recently shifted to the area. The accused was previously employed as a sales executive but is currently unemployed. There were frequent arguments between the couple over alcohol consumption and family responsibilities,” he said.

On Tuesday morning, an argument reportedly broke out between the husband and wife, after which the husband left the house. The woman’s mother-in-law had also gone out for work, leaving the accused alone with the children.

Investigators said the woman then carried out the attack.

Neighbours described the family as well-known in the locality.

“The children were friendly and active. The boy played cricket every day. Just a day earlier, the family had distributed sweets after the girl scored good marks in her exams,” a neighbour said.

Police said the children’s father was found to be under the influence of alcohol when contacted. Both the accused and her husband were brought to the police station for questioning.

An FIR has been registered against the woman under relevant sections of murder and attempt to murder. Further investigation is in progress.
