Vikarabad, Telangana, INDIA: In a shocking case of familial betrayal, a young nurse in Telangana has been arrested for allegedly murdering her parents after they opposed her relationship and marriage plans.
The accused, identified as Nakkala Surekha (25), worked as a nurse at a private hospital in Sangareddy district. Police said she was upset over her parents’ objections to her inter-caste relationship with a man she had met on social media.
The incident occurred on the night of January 24 at her parents’ residence in Yacharam village of Vikarabad district. The victims have been identified as N. Dasaratham (58) and his wife Lakshmi (54), both farmers.
According to investigators, Surekha had been in a relationship for some time and was eager to marry her partner. Frequent quarrels reportedly took place at home after her parents refused to approve the marriage, leading to growing tension within the family.
Police said Surekha allegedly stole sedative medication from the hospital where she worked. The drug, commonly used to relax patients during surgery, can be fatal if administered in high doses.
On the day of the incident, Surekha took leave from work and travelled to her parents’ home carrying the stolen medicine. After dinner, she allegedly administered lethal injections to her parents on the pretext of helping them relax and sleep.
Her mother was injected first, reportedly after being told the medicine would help ease her chronic pain. Later, she convinced her father that he was exhausted from farm work and injected him as well. Both reportedly died in their sleep due to overdose.
The following morning, Surekha informed neighbours that her parents were not waking up. Her brother Ashok rushed them to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
Initially, relatives suspected suicide due to financial stress. However, police grew suspicious after recovering a blood-stained syringe from the house. Post-mortem reports later confirmed the presence of toxic substances, pointing to death by sedative overdose.
During the investigation, police questioned family members and neighbours. Surekha reportedly gave contradictory statements and later confessed to the crime during interrogation.
Investigators also matched the serial number of the recovered drug with hospital records, confirming that it belonged to a batch used at the hospital where Surekha was employed.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer N. Srinivasa Reddy said the accused acted out of anger and frustration over her parents’ opposition to her relationship.
“In a fit of rage, she took this extreme step. We are also investigating how she obtained the medication and syringes. Strict legal action will be taken,” he said.
Police have registered a case of double murder. Surekha was arrested and produced before a magistrate, who remanded her to judicial custody.
Senior officials said further investigation is underway to determine whether anyone else was aware of the plan or assisted her. Her phone records and contacts are also being examined. Police have given a clean chit to her boyfriend, stating that he was unaware of the crime.
