Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: A 26-year-old woman has been arrested in Ghaziabad for allegedly biting off a portion of her husband’s tongue during a violent domestic altercation triggered by a dispute over cooking. The incident, which occurred late Monday January 19 night in the Sanjay Puri area under Modinagar police station limits, has left the husband with permanent injuries and exposed deep-seated marital discord within a marriage of less than a year.

The victim, Vipin (26), was initially admitted to a hospital in Ghaziabad and later referred to Subharti Medical College in Meerut for specialised treatment. Doctors have reportedly told the family that around 2.5 cm of his tongue was severed and cannot be reattached even after surgery, severely affecting his ability to speak.

According to police, the couple, married on May 6, 2025, had an argument on Monday evening over food. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Modinagar) Amit Saxena said the dispute began over cooking and escalated into a physical fight. “What started as a verbal quarrel turned violent, resulting in grievous injuries to the husband,” he said.

The incident came to light after local residents alerted police about a violent clash involving men and women in the area during the early hours of Tuesday. When police reached the spot, they found that the initial domestic dispute had snowballed into a confrontation between the two families after the woman’s relatives arrived at her in-laws’ house, leading to a fresh fight.

Vipin’s mother, Geeta, alleged in her complaint that her daughter-in-law, Isha (also referred to as Esha), frequently consumed alcohol, smoked cigarettes and often quarrelled with her son. She claimed that on Monday night, during a prolonged altercation, Isha bit off Vipin’s tongue with her teeth. “My son is now fighting to recover and may never speak properly again,” she said.

Police sources said the accused woman, during questioning, admitted to biting her husband’s tongue in a fit of rage after he objected to her drinking alcohol and argued over food. She also claimed that she was assaulted by her in-laws following the incident and denied being intoxicated at the time.

There was further commotion at the police station when Isha was brought in, with officials stating that she clashed with female police personnel during the process.

Additional Commissioner of Police Alok Priyadarshi confirmed that the arrest was made promptly. “The incident occurred following a dispute over cooking. A case has been registered and legal proceedings are underway,” he said.

Police have booked the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including provisions related to voluntarily causing grievous hurt and criminal intimidation. Legal experts say offences involving the severing of a body part can attract punishment of up to 15 years in prison.

Investigations are ongoing to establish the full sequence of events and the underlying causes of the extreme violence.
