Bengaluru, Karnataka, INDIA: A 25-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly threatening a family travelling in a car at knifepoint following a road rage incident in the Whitefield area of Bengaluru. The shocking episode, captured on the car’s dashboard camera, occurred near Nexus Shantiniketan Mall on Friday January 16 evening and sparked widespread outrage after the footage went viral on social media.
The accused has been identified as Sayed Arbaz Khan, a resident of KG Halli, who works as an assistant at a fish shop in RT Nagar. Police records reveal that Khan has a criminal history, with at least four previous cases registered against him, including preparation for dacoity and housebreaking.
According to police, the incident took place around 6 pm on January 16, when traffic had come to a halt at a signal in the congested Whitefield stretch. The dashcam footage shows Khan, who was riding a two-wheeler, getting off his motorcycle and approaching the car after an earlier argument between the two drivers.
The dispute reportedly began moments earlier when the car and the bike narrowly avoided a collision during an overtaking attempt. The car driver later alleged that Khan was riding recklessly, cutting lanes, performing stunts, violating traffic rules, and not wearing a helmet.
In the video, the car’s occupant is heard questioning the biker about his abusive behaviour. Khan is then seen pulling out a knife from his pocket and threatening the occupants, shouting, “Don’t make noise. You will die,” before walking away. The car driver can be heard exclaiming in shock, “What is this? He pulls out a knife!”
The complainant shared the dashcam footage on social media platform X, tagging the Bengaluru Police and alleging that Khan openly brandished a dagger in public. The post questioned the legality of carrying weapons in public places and highlighted growing lawlessness on city roads.
The viral video triggered widespread concern among citizens, many of whom expressed fear over increasing aggression and the apparent ease with which weapons are carried during routine traffic disputes.
Responding to the incident, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Whitefield Division, confirmed that a case had been registered at Kadugodi Police Station, the accused had been identified, and action was underway. Bengaluru City Police also acknowledged the complaint online and assured that it had been forwarded to the concerned authorities.
Police later tracked down and arrested Khan. Authorities reiterated that carrying or brandishing weapons and issuing threats in public places is a serious criminal offence and will invite strict action.
The incident comes just days after another violent road rage episode in the city, in which a delivery rider was brutally assaulted following a minor collision, further underscoring concerns over public safety on Bengaluru’s congested roads.
