Bodh Gaya, Bihar, INDIA: A wedding celebration in Bodh Gaya turned violent and was ultimately cancelled after members of the bride and groom’s families clashed over a shortage of rasgullas. CCTV footage of the November 29 incident has since gone viral on social media, drawing widespread shock — and humour — from users online.
According to officials, the brawl erupted shortly after the wedding rituals concluded at a hotel where the bride’s family was staying. The groom’s relatives had arrived from a nearby village for the ceremony.
Police said the dispute began when guests complained that the rasgullas had run out at the dessert counter. The CCTV clip shows people gathering near the food stalls moments before chaos breaks out. In the video, guests from both sides are seen punching, shoving, and swinging red plastic chairs as makeshift weapons. Plates and other items were also hurled during the melee. The couple was reportedly on their way to the wedding hall when the confrontation escalated.
Several people were injured in the fight, following which the wedding was called off.
Mahendra Prasad, the groom’s father, confirmed that the argument started over the unavailability of rasgullas and alleged that the bride’s family later filed a “false dowry case” against them. He added that his side was prepared to go ahead with the marriage despite the commotion, but the bride’s family refused.
The groom’s mother, Munni Devi, further alleged that amid the confusion, some of the bride’s relatives took jewellery she had brought as gifts, and claimed that the hotel bookings were paid for by the groom’s family.
Police have confirmed that a dowry complaint was lodged after the wedding was cancelled. Under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, demanding money or goods as a condition for marriage constitutes an offence.
Meanwhile, the viral footage has triggered a flurry of reactions online. One user quipped, “This wasn’t a wedding; it was an episode of Game of Thrones: Bodh Gaya Buffet Edition.”
Another wrote, “My country amazes me — brilliance on one side, and brawls over rasgullas on the other.”
A third user joked, “Rasgulla is a must. Good that the truth came out now; otherwise the husband would have had to live without rasgullas for life.”
