Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: In a chilling incident reminiscent of the Bollywood film Drishyam, a 25-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her husband and buried in a six-foot-deep pit behind their house in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district. The accused, Arjun, has been arrested by the police.

According to investigators, Arjun murdered his wife, Khushboo, after suspecting her of having an extramarital affair, allegedly triggered by her secret use of a mobile phone. The couple had been married for nearly two years and had no children.

The crime came to light on Thursday December 25 when the accused’s father, Shyam Narayan, informed the Belghat police about the incident. Following the tip-off, police excavated the backyard of the house in Basahi village under the Belghat police station limits and recovered Khushboo’s body buried about six feet underground along with a folding cot.

Police said Arjun, a labourer working in Ludhiana, had returned home to Gorakhpur on December 21. On the night of the incident, he allegedly found his wife using a mobile phone that she had kept hidden from him. An argument reportedly broke out between the couple, during which Arjun strangled Khushboo to death in a fit of rage.

After committing the murder, the accused attempted to mislead both his family and the police. He initially told relatives that his wife had left the house without informing anyone. He later went to his in-laws’ home and spread a false story that Khushboo had run away with ₹3,000 and a mobile phone.

When Khushboo could not be traced for several days, her younger brother lodged a missing person’s complaint, suspecting foul play. During police interrogation, Arjun repeatedly changed his statements, at first claiming his wife had committed suicide and that he had disposed of her body in the Rapti River. He even took the police to a riverbank, misleading them for several hours.

However, sustained interrogation led to his confession. Acting on his disclosure, police excavated the spot behind the house and recovered the body.

“The body was recovered based on the accused’s confession. Further action will be taken after the post-mortem report,” said Circle Officer Shilpa Kumari.

Police said Khushboo was originally from Madariya village in the Barhalganj area. Her parents had passed away, and she is survived by two minor brothers and a younger sister. A case has been registered based on a complaint filed by the victim’s brother, and further investigation is underway.
