Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, INDIA: A 28-year-old man who had been undergoing treatment for grievous head injuries allegedly inflicted by his father last month succumbed to his injuries on Monday November 24, leading the police to upgrade the charges against the accused to murder.
The deceased, identified as Hridhik, a resident of Vanchiyoor’s Thoppil Lane, had been admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital since October 9, the day the violent incident took place at his home.
According to police, a heated altercation erupted between Hridhik and his father, Vinayanand (60), after the youth allegedly demanded ₹50 lakh to purchase a high-end motorcycle and a luxury car. Despite having already received an expensive motorcycle worth around ₹12–17 lakh earlier this year, Hridhik was reportedly dissatisfied and continued to pressure his father for more money.
Police said the argument escalated when the 28-year-old allegedly began assaulting his parents. During the scuffle, he is said to have attacked and attempted to choke his father. In retaliation, and allegedly in an act of self-defence, Vinayanand struck his son on the head with a metal rod — the first object he could reach, according to his statement to the police.
Neighbours and relatives told investigators that frequent late-night arguments were common in the household, though no formal complaints had ever been filed. They also alleged that Hridhik, who was pursuing an online MBA and living with his parents, was unemployed, had a history of demanding expensive items, and would often become violent when his demands were rejected. Police further said he had been undergoing treatment for certain mental health issues and was suspected of drug abuse.
Following the assault, Hridhik was rushed to the medical college hospital with critical head injuries and remained under treatment for more than a month before he succumbed on November 24.
Vinayanand, who was initially arrested and later released on bail on charges of attempted murder, will now face murder charges. Vanchiyoor Police confirmed that steps are being taken to arrest him again in light of the upgraded offence.
Authorities said further investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances leading to the deadly confrontation.
