Faridabad, Haryana, INDIA: A 17-year-old girl was shot at by a 19-year-old man who had been allegedly stalking and harassing her in Faridabad’s Ballabgarh area on Monday November 3 evening. The shocking incident, caught on CCTV, shows the attacker waiting in ambush before firing twice at the girl as she returned home from a private library in Shyam Colony.
Police identified the accused as Jatin Mangla, a resident of the same locality, who is now absconding. He has been booked under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant provisions of the Arms Act. Multiple teams, including those from the Crime Branch, have been deployed to trace and arrest him.
The Incident
According to police, the teenager was returning home around 5:15 pm along with two of her friends when the accused, who had been lying in wait on a motorcycle outside the library, intercepted her. CCTV footage shows Jatin standing next to his bike, appearing to conceal a weapon in his bag. As the girl entered the alley, he crossed the lane, pulled out a country-made pistol, and fired two rounds at her from close range.
One bullet struck her left shoulder, while the second grazed her abdomen. Startled, her friends ran for safety as the girl collapsed, crying for help. The assailant dropped his weapon at the scene and sped away on his motorcycle.
Residents rushed out after hearing the gunshots and took the injured girl to a nearby private hospital, where she is undergoing treatment. Doctors said she suffered injuries to her shoulder and forearm but is currently out of danger.
Police Investigation
A case was registered late Monday night at Ballabgarh City Police Station based on the victim’s statement. Police later recovered the country-made pistol used in the attack from the spot.
“We have identified the accused as Jatin Mangla. The victim knew him as they both used to visit the same library. He had been bothering her for some time after she stopped speaking to him two weeks ago. Preliminary investigation indicates that the shooting was premeditated,” said a police spokesperson.
Family Speaks Out
The victim’s sister said that Jatin had been stalking her for several days and had even been confronted by the family earlier. “We had warned his family about his behaviour. His mother pleaded with us not to take the matter to the police, saying he wouldn’t repeat it. We trusted them, but the next day he tried to kill her,” she said tearfully.
She added that her sister, who is preparing for her board examinations, used the same route daily to return from coaching classes. “He aimed at her heart, but she raised her hand to protect herself. The bullet went through her hand and hit her shoulder. This could have been another Nikita Tomar case,” she said, referring to the 2020 Ballabgarh murder, where college student Nikita Tomar was shot dead outside her college by her former classmate after she rejected his proposal.
Police Response
Faridabad Police Commissionerate officials said efforts are underway to trace the absconding accused. “Crime Branch teams are scanning CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and questioning acquaintances of the accused. He will be arrested soon,” an officer said.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns over women’s safety in Haryana, particularly in the Ballabgarh region, which has witnessed several cases of stalking-related violence in recent years.
